Jennings family Minchinhampton GLS
« on: Thursday 09 August 12 05:16 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm interested in finding out more about the Jennings clan who came from Minchinhampton, GLS from 1700s onwards. I'm descended from William Jennings and Ann Page who married in Minchinhampton in 1820 and migrated to Australia in 1839 along with a number of their children. I think William Jennings' parents were John Jennings and Mary Barnfield (married December 1791 in Minchinhampton) but can't find a record of his baptism.

There is a William Jennings (father John) baptised in 1803 in Cirencester, I think this may be him but not sure. John and Mary Jennings had Lucretia Jennings christened 1974 and there are a few other children baptised in Cirencester with father John Jennings including:

-   Marianne Jennings born 1801 in Cirencester,
-   Hannah Jennings born 1808 Cirencester
-   Margaret Jennings born 1806 Cirencester.
-   Mary Jennings born 1809 Cirencester.

I understand that John Jennings was the son of Samuel Jennings and Hester Clift (married 1763 in Minchinhampton) and had a number of siblings who stayed in the Minchinhampton area including:

- Samuel Jennings (married Mary Horwood and had Joseph Jennings, George Jennings m.Elizabeth Wood, William Thomas Jennings, Anna Maria, Elizabeth (Rodborough), Maria and Sarah Jane (Rodborough),

Priscilla Jennings b. 1794 (married John Smith and had Elizabeth Smith b. 22 February 1829 Rodborough, Thomas Smith b. 1828, Mary Anne Smith b. 1826, Harriet Smith b. 1826, William Smith b. 1826 and Eliza Smith b. 1829),

Maria Jennings 1796 (married John Jennings 1828 Rodborough (a cousin?) children Alfred Thomas Jennings baptized at the Rodborough Tabernacle 5 July 1829. Father’s occupation listed as weaver.

Joseph Jennings christened 1769 Michinhampton – no record of marriage?

-Hester Jennings christened 1769 Michinhampton married James Clutterbuck 1781. Children – James Clutterbuck baptized 1791 died 1800 Minchinhampton, and Esther Clutterbuck baptized 1786 Minchinhampton.

Any further information on the Jennings and their descendants would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Liz,
I presume that you do NOT require any further lookups @ Glos Archives?

May I have a lookup as well, but I promise at least to say thank you for your troubles.

I believe from the 1861 Census of St. Pancras that a William Earle Jennings was also born in Minchinhampton c1801. From a second  marriage (1841 St. John Hampstead Elizabeth Whiting) and a third marriage (Mary Ann Green 1848 Old Church St. Pancras) in London, his father was named Charles Jennings and a surgeon.

I see that you previous look ups names a Charles Jennings, but a weaver. Can you help with a birth in Minchinhampton with William Earle Jennings c1801?

Wm's grand daughter Marjorie Day was an actress in London in 1908.

The London dramatic critics speak in complimentary terms of the performance by Miss Marjorie Day (late of Auckland) in the part of Essie in Bernard Shaw's play, The Devil's Disciple," which was produced this week at the Savoy Theatre.  Otago newspaper

Thank you for your assistance.

I will spend a little more time tomorrow; however, I am also struggling on the Charles Jennings, the father of William Earle Jennings.

I might also try another angle, to see if I can find children for the great granddaughter Marjory Day and her husband George Thomas Murphy in London, post 1913.

That is interesting of a John Charles Earle as a surgeon in Queens Square, Bristol in 1830. It warrants further research as to the middle name of William Earle Jennings.

My relative Dr. James Lee Rees was also a doctor in Bristol at this time.
His daughter Isabel Rose Rees was the mother of William John Sydney Day, who married Mary Ann Jennings, but then that is stretching straws a little too far in making any assumptions.

Thank you.
