Joseph Macnab, Newton, 1868
« on: Thursday 09 August 12 12:02 BST (UK) »
Dear Cheshire Rootschatters

FindMyPast has online Cheshire Electoral Registers. I have found Joseph Macnab in Bennet Lane, Newton, nr. Victoria Street, Nr. Hyde, the occupier of a machine shop, 1868-69. Also in Bennet Lane in 1870. Yet I cannot find him in the 1861 census, nor in 1871, and nor can I find Bennet Lane or Victoria Street in either census. Do any of you have an idea why not?

Also - which Newton would this be please?

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Newton(also Newton Moor) comes under Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire on the census.  Joseph looks to be in Scotland in 1861

Joseph McNAB married Mary EASTON 05 Oct 1869, Abbey Paisley, Renfrew
(Source Familysearch.Org)

The McNabs address in 1871 is Ashton Road.
1881 it is 132 Mottram Road, Hyde, Cheshire.
He was employing 70 men/boys by 1881.

Have a look around on here;

I did find Mottram St on an old map

Hi
If you put 132 Mottram Road, Godley, hyde Sk14 2RZ in Google you will see where the house was - or might even still be. If I get chance, I will see if it's still there at the corner of Halton Street. It might have been where the gap is near the traffic lights.

Bit of extra info (if you don't already have it  :) ) -

Joseph MacNab of Hyde, died 4 Feb 1898

Historical Directories  - Morris & Co.'s Directory & Gazetteer of Cheshire, 1874, entry for -

Pollock & MacNab, Engineers & Toolmakers, Britannia Iron Works, Newton Moor.

There are various pieces of information regarding this firm available on the internet.

Thank you all very much for finding Joseph Macnab for me. He seems to have been a very succesful individual. It is confusing when Newton ups and moves from Cheshire to Lancashire, and that's probably why I missed him - I typed Cheshire into the County box, so he doesn't come up.

Unfortunately (for me!) I now think he is not 'my' Joseph Macnab because he is too young. My Joseph lived in Stanhope St., Toxteth park, Liverpool in 1841, married to Frances (nee Hodgson). He disappeared after that, and I cannot identify his death, so I wondered if he just left her. He was described variously as an engineer and an iron turner, so when I found a metal-working man with the same name in nearby Cheshire,  I thought it might be him. But my Joseph was born in 1804, so I don't think it's the same one.

Many thanks again
