Armstrong wed Scoon
« on: Thursday 09 August 12 13:02 BST (UK) »
Hello All,
Does anyone know of a marriage between William Armstrong & Helen Scoon? I gather it probably took place around 1768 or earlier as they appeared to be producing children in the Canonbie area by then.
Cheers,
Bob
PS Any info on William's parents also needed

Hi

No information on a wedding, but some thoughts.

1.    Only one obvious candidate for Helen Scoon; bap 29.12.1746 Canonbie to John Scoon and Helen Scott
2.    William and Helen's first child was bap John, possibly after maternal gf (John), but more likely a paternal gf John Armstrong as well
3.    Most of William/Helen's chilldren were given names common amongst the Langholm/Canonbie Scoons - Christopher stands out as not fitting this pattern, so there's a good chance it comes from the Armstrong side if that gives you a clue

Thanks Don.
Sound logic. Also, Christopher (Christie etc) are popular names on the Scottish side for Armstrongs.

Hi Bob,
There doesn't seem to be a marriage listed for this couple in the OPR. However, I found a burial record for Nelly Scoon Claygate Canonbie dated 14-5-1803, from the OPR Death and Burial Index, if that helps. She doesn't seem to appear in the Canonbie MI's compiled by George Gilchrist.
As you know, Nelly is a common variant of Helen.
