The penny did drop, and I clicked on the blue names and found them!thankyou.
So that looks like she was a sibling of Michael.(no offence taken at the "blind"ref.)..we have so many common names on both sides, the currans and the aughneys....VERY common are John,Catherine,Michael and frances(fanny)..there are lots of them.
Will look on family search to see any more births for John and alicia(although I found illig children, same year of baptism,1841)father John aughney.,mother ? Corcoran..Newtown.
Leo's mother also had twins(d.a few days old, after she had a heavy fall),so twins are in the family...could this be "blind"John?
Incidentally, eye problems seem to be prevalent in the family..I have been told of at least 3people,inc my husband, with eye problems,or even blind.
Re the illigitimacies..I have just(with the help of GR,put leos cousin in touch with his niece(his sister had two illig children, before marrying and having a son)I was contacted by a member who recognised his gt gt g/father on my family tree and it was the right one!

Hi Elaine,

It's not a defo that it's the same Anne, but a good possibility I suppose.

Just to recap...where did you find the baptism of Anne to John and Alicia (nee Ryan) ?

I'm not great with the townlands of Carlow, and I know that Shane mentioned some other Newtown's but I have found this mention of HAUGHNEY'S in Newtown (click on blue writing and then scroll down the page that will come up) - some of the names mentioned may add up to you !

haughney's of newtown

it was in Bagenalstown Baptisms(don't know what the actual site was..thats what i ggogled)
That was also where i found Anne Aughney,bapt.13th July 1823(possible sibling of "blind"John)...her father down as Michael Aughney .,mother,Bridget Kinsella(Kildrina)...Kildreenagh is nr bagenalstown.
If this Anne IS Johns' sister, then they would be his parents too, taking me back another generation.

Also there, there was a cath.(2nd Jan.1842)william(8th Dec.1844)Mary(9th May 1847)..father.,James Aughney.,mother Mary Brien......going off the years of baptism,James would prob have been born c 1820 or thereabouts....sibling of "blind" John and Anne?
Supposition until i can connect em all!
All i do know,is that both the Currans and the Aughneys had BIG families...at least 5 kids, but usually more than that,so there may be more siblings for "blind"John, and for Michael

Elaine

ps...i am just LOVING all this..it is SO thrilling when something matches!

Hi Elaine,

Yes genealogy is super addictive BUT

Word of Warning - take it slowly when doing your tree.

It can be easy with a rare surname like Aughney to presume that everyone is related, and maybe they are, but without documentation to back it up, your tree will really just be all guesswork.

I fully understand how expensive it can be, but a 4 euro cert to confirm things is a much better investment than an incorrect tree.
