1881 Slater's Directory for Carlow has a John Aughney listed as a farmer in Bagnelstown

There is also a John Aughney listed as a miller in Kilcarrick Bagnalstown

more likely the first one....i have a copy of Alicias' death cert..she died in 1907,in Newtown.,aged 80.,wife of a farmer.,died from general debility,3weeks,no medical attendant.,informant was her dau-in-law,Catherine Aughney, present at death.
registrars district:-Bagenalstown.,Co.Carlow.

but i still need to find out if there were more children than michael,...the Ann i found the baptism of in Bagenalstown to John Aughney and Alicia Ryan now seems more  likely.

funnily enough,i have had the certs for a couple of months....read the details, but NEVER read the district!

will do in future...will read EVERYTHING on certs!

Elaine

btw..whats Slaters Directory?

The Slaters Directory is like a list of people in different areas and their occupations - usually trades.

I think with the rarity of the surname you can nearly guarantee that Anne is a sister to Michael.

I think there are only 47 people with this surname in all of Ireland on the 1901 census and pretty much all of those in Carlow.

my husbands' paternal side is Curran, and theres absolutely LOADS of them!

Shane...i don't have a marriage for Michael and Catherine, but do have a copy of the birth cert.of their dau.Catherine(Katie, who went to America)...father.,Michael Aughney.,mother.,Catherine Aughney, formerly Byrne.

Hi Elaine,

There appears to have been an Anne Aughney having a few children 'out of wedlock'

I'm wondering MIGHT this be 'your' Anne ???

baptism patrick aughney

baptism anne aughney

baptism catherine aughney

Also, I'm wondering MIGHT your family's surname have originally been HAUGHNEY ?

Looking at records, this is still a rarish surname but a lot more that Aughney !

Lol...still chuckling at the "out of wedlock"...very diplomatic!
I'm also doing mat. and pat. on my mum and dads side...traced grandad Stockton back about 4or5generations,then after double checking, found gt grandad had died 2 yrs before my grandad was born!
Unmarried mothers been round a good while!
Have a listing on roots chat for grandads family(this in Ireland,so I come to a full stop!)..they Rices and Mahons.
Where were the baptisms of Patrick,Anne and Catherine?
I suppose it's possible re haughney...we have a Denis also down as Dennis and Mahon down as Mahan. I suppose the records were difficult to read.
I appreciate all the help...I realise getting copies of certs etc just to eliminate people is easier, but on pension I can only afford to buy copies of the RIGHT people.
Was the Ann having the illegitimate children, the Ann b.1823,a poss sister of blind John,or the one b.1846,a poss sister of Michael, and dau of blind John?

Hi Elaine

If you click on the names written in blue - they are actually links to the baptisms.

They were all in Bagenalstown !!

Ages are adding up to the Anne (mother of the 3 children) to have been the daughter of blind John - sorry to refer to him as such, am just using your words.

Yes, genealogy can be a sensitive subject at the best of times, so I do try to be as diplomatic as poss LOL !
