My Russian Ancestors
« on: Monday 13 August 12 16:52 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I've spent a while searching for my Jewish great-grandparents who were born in Russia. I managed to find a 1911 census with their family after they emigrated from Russia to England. My great-grandfather (Lewis Kravitz) was born around 1873 and my grandmother (Mary Moggin) around 1877. My grandfather (David Kravitz) was born in Ca 1897 in Russia, however all his siblings were born in Bethnal Green, England. So it looks as if he emigrated from Russia at a fairly young age. Also, when people say they came from Russia around 1900, they were talking about a different Russia to what we know now. Around 1900, Russia included the Ukraine, Moldova parts of Romania, a lot of Poland and also some or all of the three Baltic States. I can't seem to find any records as to their parents and where they were in the Russian Empire, where should I continue my research?

Thanks a lot,

Isaac :)

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/
shows a Kravitz, Lewis naturalisation in 1919.

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/31495/pages/10103/page.pdf
 - here is it referenced in the London Gazette.

If the details there match with David's father (this Lewis was a tailor's presser from Russia, had served in the armed forces, address was 151, Stepney Green, London), then it would be worth looking up his file.

Thanks jorose,

David was born in Russia Ca 1897, so it looks as if his parents (Lewis and Mary) probably emigrated from Russia in 1898. Because Hyman, the next child, was born in London Ca 1899 based on his age on the census.

The postal adress on the 1911 census does not match 161, Stepney Green, London.

Hi Isaac

We must be related. These are my great grand parents too.

My grandmother was the brother of David, Hyman etc, Esther Kirsh, nee Kravitz

My mother told me they were cattle farmers from Lithuania who came to London in the late 1800s. Let's connect.
