"Bobby" Troughton 1835-1912
« on: Monday 20 August 12 16:55 BST (UK) »
Hello Group
I'm writing a book on Robert "Bobby" Troughton of Kendal who lived 1835-1912, and formed and hunted the Kendal Otter Hounds also know as the Kendal Otter Hunt Club, he was also a builder of some skill constructing buildings and bridges, would anyone have any detail or information they would be willing to share on a reciprocal basis? Sadly he seems to be all but forgotten in his native Kendal

Hi and welcome

Have you followed him through the censuses from 1841-1911?

If he is the one married to Sarah - he was an inn keeper in 1891 and a retired publican in 1901.

He was a waller in 1861 and a master builder employing 6 men & 3 boys in 1881

This appears to be his baptism from the IGI

Freebmd shows he married Sarah Thompson in 1860  www.freebmd.org.uk

The marriage is on the IGI

thank you very much, yes I have followed him via the census. He is extensively documented in the newspapers of the time both hunting, cockfighting and his building activity. This however throws up more questions. for example. He was presented with a hunting horn by the followers from Lunesdale, what happened to it ?

I'm given to understand the 95% of all Troughton's live in Kendal, except for a Dr Who! who lives in cyberspace

The "public house" was the legendary "Hyena" on Fellside, today a private house.

This may be a wee bit of an exaggeration. There are 10 Troughton families in the Carlisle and North Cumbria phone book, so unless there are over 200 in Kendal...
I see you have looked at the censuses. Can you briefly list the other sources you have used to avoid covering the same ground or posting leads that have already been used?
Forster Cul, Harrison Cul, Wood Cul Yks, Castley Cul & Wes, Lorimer Cul and Perth,Innis Cul, Casson, Cul, Johnston,Cul & Nfk, Carruthers Cul, Ewart Cul, Jardine Cul & Dmf, Story Cul, ONeill Cul & NI, Davis Cul & Ldn,
