Help with birth - Charles Alexander Burleigh Robson
« on: Thursday 23 August 12 19:20 BST (UK) »
Hi, I've just started helping a friend with his family tree and have a problem already! We are unable to find any birth records of his great grandfather, Charles Alexander Burleigh Robson b abt 1882. All the information we have of him is from his son's death records from WW2.

Major Charles Alexander ROBSON, given as aged 29 and born in India on his
death cert. (KIA in Italy in 1944).
Father, 2nd Lieutenant Charles Alexander Burleigh ROBSON (known as
Charles), 2nd Battalion of the Royal Irish Fusiliers stationed in India after the
Boer war until leaving for France in December 1914. Died of wounds 8th November
1917.
Charles Alexander Burleigh Robson seems to have been a career army man which makes me wonder if his father (mentioned in his WW1 death records as Charles Burleigh Robson of Newcastle) had also been in the Services and they were also born abroad...

Can anyone suggest a route to follow? It doesn't help having so many people with the same name!! I have also posted on the Armed forces board just in case!

Any help finding these mens' births would be much appreciated!

I have only just joined Rootschat so please bear with me
Are you still researching Charles Alexander Robson and his father? Charles Jnr was my mums cousin, she was also engaged to him. My mum passed away 8 years ago aged almost 90. She had been married to my dad for 50 years but never forgot Charles. After she passed away I found a letter written by Charles in mid 1943, 6 months or so before he died in Italy. I believe it to be a form of 'Dear John' letter as he incates that he doesn't believe he and mum should marry but also that he won't survive the war. Charles has always been close to my own heart so about 25 years ago I started to do some research and found what had happened to him and his father. I will never fully understand but I believe that the family didn't tell my mum of his death in the war.
I was very kindly sent copies of the war diaries from both WW1 and 2. I'm incredibly proud to be related to these 2 men. All my family has now gone that would know any more about either of them. I do have photos of Charles though if anyone wanted to see them.
My mums sister sometimes mentioned them, I recall she said Charles senior entered the army as a cook. His son went to Sandhurst. Charles Jnr was born in India on Christmas Day either 1914 or 15. Charles's mother Alice was very much against him marrying my mum, she tried her utmost to put a stop to it. I don't believe my family had anything to do with her after Charles was killed.
I have always wondered where their medals are and wished that I could touch them, at least I now know that they are with someone that cares.

Welcome to Rootschat, Cumbrianangel  :)

Thank you for sharing that story. Very sad and lots of gaps you'll probably not fill but you have already been able to get quite a bit of information. Unfortunately the person who started this thread hasn't been online since 2012 but there might be more details in this other topics-
