SIT: New possibilities in the SIT: Occupations
« on: Sunday 26 August 12 16:53 BST (UK) »
I've added a new field to the SIT.

You can now enter occupations for your family names, where several generations have followed the same profession(s).

The field is 40 characters long, so you can enter several occuptions, or you can add occuptions seperately.
For instance, many of my Margulies ancestors were Rabbis, Lawyers and/or Journalists,
so I've written "Rabbis, Lawyers, Journalists" in the occupations-field.

I have also include a pull-down menu for occupations which are particularly interesting for RootsChatters.

At the moment there are two entries in this list,
Cork Cutters; see see http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,70636.0.html
German Pork Butchers; see http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,408853.0.html

This idea came to me after writing this reply here:

I've started recording German pork butchers as I find them and adding them to a list I'm building up.

And if you then put them on the web, then that could be the start of a "German Pork Butchers" site,
similar to the "German Sugar Bakers" site   ;D
http://www.mawer.clara.net/history.html

regards,
Bob

I then started thinking, "how could RootsChat help ?", and it occurred to me, that a first approach (and the easiest) would be to add an occupations field to the SIT so that "like-minded" could find connections easier.

You can enter any occupations you wish, but for certain "projects" the pull-down menu makes life easier (and the spelling is always the same, for searching  ;D )
If you think others could be/should be added here, let me know.

Enjoy,
Bob

This SIT "mini database" is just a step in this direction - and as an experiment for me, to see if it could be done in this way.  Now I know how to ..., if there is enough interest I could do the same for ....   for instance: framework knitters or corkcutters or or any other long topics, where somebody has set the question "do you have any XYZ ancestors ?"

I have just added a lot of names of german pork butchers to the SIT by filtering the names and RootsChatter out of a long pork butcher topic and a couple of shorter ones.  If anybody else is interested in having surnames for other occupations added in this way, please let me know :)

regards,
Bob
