Robertson dead end?
« on: Sunday 26 August 12 21:08 BST (UK) »
I have hit a bit of a dead end with my family tree. I have got back to William Robertson.

He married Sarah Nicol in Tarbolton in 1866 and states on the census he was born around 1846/7 in Coylton Ayrshire (which is where he is buried).

On the marriage entry it details his parents Andrew Robertson & Elizabeth Cavins. They were married in Tarbolton in 1842

Elizabeth was a farmer's servant on the 1841 census in Tarbolton stating she was born in Ayrshire around 1826.

I can find no definate birth/baptism details for William.

They do not appear as a family on the 1851 census...that I can find am not very good at searching for variants on Scotlandspeople. I think perhaps Elizabeth dies but can find no record of death.

I am not certain of Andrew's birth year or location, and have found numerous Andrew Robertson's in the area around this time. So I am struggling to pin down just which Andrew is the father of William.

Any help, hints or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Just thinking that too!

There is this entry for example in 1851:

Andrew Robison 26, Ironstone Miner, Kirkmichael, Ayrshire
Sarah Robison 20 wife, b. Ballantrae, Ayrshire
Agnes Robison 6 b. Coylton, Ayrshire
William Robison 5 b. Coylton, Ayrshire
Address: 29 Waterside V, Waterside, Dalmellington

Robertson/Robson/Robinson etc would all be surname variants.

This entry for 1861?

Andrew Robertson 38, coal miner b. Kirkmichel, Ayrshire
William Robertson 14, coal miner b. Coylton, Ayrshire
Jeanie Robertson 10 b. Dalmellington, Ayrshire
Andrew Robertson 4 b. Dreghorn, Ayrshire
Mary Robertson 2 b. Dreghorn, Ayrshire
Annie Robertson 27, sister, Master Sewer, b. Daily, Ayrshire
Address: 8 No 3 Pit Perceton, Dreghorn Ayrshire

Children for Andrew and Sarah show here www.rootschat.com/links/0qgm/  Children show as born after 1861, so wife Sarah must just be away from home for this census.

Thank you very much. I did have a 'Sarah' down as a possible second wife. I can't find a death to match though, I think he may have married again after Sarah?

By 1881 Sarah is alone and head of the household living in New Cumnock. No death registered for an Andrew Robertson before then though...that I can' find anyway lol

And thank you for the welcome

this is the problem I had  :-\ I don't know perhaps if any parish records were destroyed. The Cemetary where William is buried there is the remains of a very very old church there.
