Name - John TRAYNOR
« on: Sunday 02 September 12 16:48 BST (UK) »
I am researching John Traynor who was born in Cavan (possibly Bailieborough) around 1861. I understand that he moved to Liverpool when still a boy, and subsequently served in the merchant navy and then in the marines. He also spent seven years in Australia, before returning to the UK.

I believe that he had family in the Liverpool area and was related to another member of the Traynor family who was famous for being cured of first world war injuries at Lourdes.

I would be very grateful for any info about him  :D

Hello Chris and welcome to Rootschat.

You don't say where you have your information from so maybe you already have this.
1881 has a Jno Traynor b 1862 Cavan at the Royal Marine Barracks in Devon.

1881 also has a Margaret Traynor b 1863 Cavan working in West Derby.

1871 has a family in Liverpool - parents Bernard and Bridget with children John and Margaret and Thomas (who dies shortly afterwards). maybe not!

Margaret marries and gives her place of birth in 1901 as Balyborough, Cavan.

I am wondering if, like me, you have put these folk together.

regards

heywood

Thanks everyone for your replies. This chap is my maternal grandfather and was something of an adventurer in his early life. Although married and living in London in 1906, he used to visit Liverpool regularly, staying for months at a time. We know that he had relatives there (Scotland Road?) perhaps even another family. He also spent seven years in the bush in Australia panning for gold and silver before coming back to the UK.

Hi again
Did he marry anywhere? If you have a marriage certificate, you may get his father's name. What evidence do you have for Cavan? Also what about the connection to John and Lourdes?

If you are looking for records in Cavan, you will need to confirm his father. Looking at the census, he may possibly be Bernard, a tailor.
The service record may also name his father or at least give some clues.
Margaret, the daughter of Bernard married Humphrey Blinkhorn.

The only evidence we have for his birthplace in Cavan and his links to John Traynor in Liverpool is what he told my mother and grandmother. This man died in 1938 and we have no documentation, so we have little to go on

Thankyou.

You need to look at what may be able to be found.
As he had children - did he have a wife? What was her name? Were the children born in London or elsewhere.
