Germany - Sankt Wendel bosel

Hi I have recently found through USA census records that my family came from Wendel Germany . Just wondered if anyone can help me with some searches  or information for where to contact for birth certificates etc Information i have is
Fritz LINKUGEL born August 1841 in Wendel and married to Louise born Oct 1845
According to the Kansas USA census the arrived from Germany in 1875  He was a farmer and had mortgaged land .

Sankt Wendel is in Saarland:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sankt_Wendel

The River Mosel flows through the Saarland, so I was wondering whether that was Mosel rather than Bosel, but the Mosel is further away.

You will probably also need to know whether Fritz was protestant or catholic so you can write to the relevant church archives.
