Guadeloupe - FAIRFORTH
« on: Sunday 09 September 12 01:51 BST (UK) »
My partner, although of French West Indian descent, has British names in his family tree. He is having difficulty tracing ancestors - would be particularly interested in the name Fairforth?
Can anybody help?
Warmly & Sincerely

As far as I can see the name "Fairforth" is not common in UK records - not found on freebmd.rootsweb.com , very few familysearch.org hits and those which do appear seem to be mistranscriptions.  There are possibly related names around (e.g. Farfort).

There are some civil registrations from Guadeloupe available here:
http://anom.archivesnationales.culture.gouv.fr/caomec2/recherche.php?territoire=GUADELOUPE

I presume Guadeloupe follows French privacy regulations, so if he needed more modern records he'd probably need to contact the appropriate Mairie (where the event was originally registered).

There was a Fred Fairforth, aged 11, on the "HESPERIAN", departing Liverpool on 21st Feb 1913 for Halifax, Canada.

Also, on the 1911 census at an Institution: Children's Homes Village System Poor Law....

Elizabeth Fairforth  born 1903 Hunslet, Yorkshire
Henrietta Fairforth  born 1898 Leeds, Yorkshire.

                                                                                          Brian

P.S.   Perhaps you are looking for a Fairforth who went out to Guadeloupe
a very long time ago?

Thanks very much for your help - I'll pass the info on. The idea of deformation of the name is a good one: the family have also used Fairford and the current one I think is Fairfort and there may be other deformations particularly as the French aren't very good at pronouncing "th" :)

And yes I think the ancestors might go much further back but with such an unusual l name, the ones from 1911 might still be connected.

Merci beaucoup  :)
Warmly & Sincerely

Hi,

Are you sure that the family name is FAIRFORTH and not FAIRFORT/FAIRFORD ?

The FAIRFORTS/FAIRFORDS are from Bouillante in Guadeloupe.

Charles FAIRFORD got married there in 1870 to Rosalie NABIS.

He is 24 years old and is a native of Bouillante. His parents are the late Jean Charles FAIRFORD and Marie Joseph FLORIDE (she is alive and is 46 years old). He was born out of wedlock.

His brother Joseph Célimont FAIRFORD, 27 years old, is one of the four witnesses. Unlike his brother, Joseph Célimont can sign his name.

You also find a FAIRFORT family in Basse-Terre

but they are also from Bouillante.

Charles Marie Sylvestre FAIRFORT married Louise Valentine NABIS there in 1899.

He is a son of Joseph FAIRFORD and Marie Nérée LACIDES.

Charles FAIRFORD, 53 years old, is a witness.

They are full siblings.

Their father, Jean Charles FAIRFORD, passed away in 1851 in Bouillante at the age of 31.

He was a carpenter. Unknown parents.

Let me know if you see a link.

Hello David, Thank you so much for your detailed help. I'll pass this information on. Yes, the Fairforths did drop the last H or change the TH into D once in Gaudaloupe although I understood they were originally based in Marie Galante (although Guadeloupe might have been the office for BMD registration).

Marie-Galante is a part of Guadeloupe.
There are three towns : Saint-Louis, Grand-Bourg and Capesterre de Marie-Galante.
If they lived in Marie-Galante, they are registered there.

Jean Charles FAIRFORD was a native of Bouillante.

Who is the most distant Guadeloupean ancestor your companion is aware of ?
