Burial Look-Up (Landican or Flaybrick)
« on: Tuesday 11 September 12 10:25 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone

I am not sure which cemetery my great grandfather is buried in, he comes from West Derby in Liverpool but I believe he died in the Birkenhead registration area in 1905. Can anyone help me find where he is buried?
It will either be Lanidcan or Flaybrick.  He died in 1905 and his name was Richard Alphington Quick born 1873 in West Derby, Liverpool.  His wife, Agnes Woolrich Quick, born 1873 in Tranmere, Birkenhead but I am not sure at the moment, where she died or was buried but would assume it was also Birkenhead. Any details at all would be great, many thanks.

Hi AuntyGene

Do you know the date of death for  Richard?

If you do know the full date as well as the year you can normally
contact the Council Bereavment office and they will if kind enough
give you a clue as to if they are buried in a certain cemetary or not.
Looks like Birkenhead information is at Wirrall Council now.

If you dont know all the details, there normally would be a charge.

Looked at Birkenhead registration districts and Landican was in
the North Birkenhead district.  Its also about 7 miles from
Walton on the Hill where Richard was living on the 1901 census.

Wondered if you knew what happened to them both as they
both died in 1905  What a shame for the children who were only
about 5 or 6 by then. Did they die in the 1905 railway accident
on the Liverpool to Southport line?

Hi Sandy

Thank you for replying so quickly and yes, I will take your advice and see where they are buried.

Now Richard Alphington did die in 1905 and yes, maybe he did die in that railway accident, which I have never heard of before so will go and investigate that and see if there are a list of casualties.  I looked further for the death of his wife and I found her on the 1911 census living with family members and it looks like she died in 1947.

I will let you know if Richard did indeed die in that accident.  If he did, I will forever be in your debt as it has been a mystery to the family for a long time.

Many thanks
Aunty Gene

Hi

You can rule out Landican Cemetery as that did not open until c1934

Hi , sorry, I dont know why I thought Agnes died in 1905 as well.

There is another one at Flaybrick Cemetary , opened in 1864 Tollemarche Road,
Birkenhead,
Birkenhead Central Reference Library hold copies of burials as well.
It also states that Landican Cemetary hold the records of both
Birkenhead cemetaries and you can ring them on 01516772361
Hope you found them

Hi Sandymc

I left a message on the Lancashire page to see if anyone knew of where I could see a casualty list of the train accident and am pleased to say that he was not involved in it, thankfully, it looked an awful accident and I knew nothing of it.  I had an immediate reply, which was brilliant.

I shall have to assume that Richard is buried in Flaybrick since Landican was not even opened in 1905 or possible one of the cemeteries near West Derby as I do have the funeral papers of one relative who died in Birkenhead but was buried in Aintree cemetery.

Thank you again for your help.

Hi again,

Dont know if you know about Genuki but if you want to know
places around somewhere e.g West Derby, do a search putting
genuki on the end and on the first page if you look at the top
it says 'nearby places'.  If you click on that it will bring you all
the cities, villages and hamlets around your search and gives you
how many miles they are.  I have found lots of
ancestry for others by doing this kind of search so it gives
you an idea of whats around.  West Derby is 3.8 miles from Aintree,
and 2 miles from Walton on the Hill.   ;D

Hi

West Derby Registration District where Richards birth was registered covers a large part of Liverpool and nearby villages. The link below shows the area covered.

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/west%20derby.html

Another possible cemetery for deaths in Birkenhead is Bebington Cemetery but Flaybrick Hill should be the first one to check.

Hi Aunty Gene

I hadn't seen your message and was at the library yesterday - sorry.

If you haven't found out any more by next week I'll probably go over again and can look at the burial records for Flaybrick and Bebington records for you to see if there's a burial .

Regards

Neptune
