Hello MarMnkly

Taken from the LDS 1851 transcript for Devon,

Mary Ann Shere age 47, Farmer's wife, born Cullompton Devon.  Living at Yeates, Cullompton Tiverton
PRO Ref:HO/107/1888 fo225  page 14  FHL Film:   0221038
Ambrose was 52.

There is another Ambrose Shere on the transcript, age 26, unmarried, also a farmer in "part of Bradfield Barton," born Kentisbeare.  I would think he must be connected. Ref HO107/1888 fo 424 p 17.

Hope that helps.

Nell

Hello MarMnkly,

Did you work out Mary Ann wife of Ambose c 1851?

I have a CD copy the transcripts for Cullompton purchased from DFHS and found their marriage, 14 Feb 1834, her maiden name Bennett.

GenUKI Cullompton has her baptism 1804 and date of birth. Easy for you to find for yourself now you have the surname.

Both sources are only transcriptions.

Salute,

Janelle

Hi Janelle, thanks so much for your reply  :) - yes, I did manage to find her birth as Mary Ann Bennett in 1804 to John Pedlar Bennett and his wife Martha (nee Mills). I was also able to find my ancestor (her sister Embling) born 1806 and christened 1809.
Mary Ann died childless in 1857, but when her sister Embling had a child in 1847, he was named Ambrose Shere Massey, I assume after his uncle.

kind regards - I will complete this post now

;D oh yes Ambrose Shere abounds... one in each family in each generation.

A lot of my people were in Cullompton and a neice of my ancestor (Robert Coleman of Ponsford farm) Sarah Kent Coleman b 1828 dau of John and Sarah (Kent) marries another Ambrose Shere (possibly nephew to yours) and their 2nd son b 1853 is also named Ambrose.  ;D

There is a post to rootsweb c 2002 about this Ambrose and Sarah and the posting person very kindly shared Coleman information with me, and while not researching anymore was happy to be contacted.
