Joseph Hartley
« on: Tuesday 11 September 12 12:39 BST (UK) »
I have just discovered that one of my 2x great uncle Joseph Hartley travelled to Houston, Texas with his wife Mary when he was 64 years old in 1925.

I am now trying to pick him up coming back to England.

I have found a Joseph and Mary Hartley travelling back to England in 1929 but I am not convinced that it's him as he says he intends to live in Blackpool on his return.

He was born about 1861 in Oakworth, West Yorkshire and had family in the area so I would assume he'd go back to his birthplace.

I was very surprised to him up sticks at that age and go to the USA.

He was a cabinet maker and I would have thought by then he would have retired.

Can anyone help me find him on the return journey please?

There is a death in Keighley in 1929 which is more likely to be him.

I'll see if I can find a burial to match the death I found.

Hi Gibby,

Had a look yesterday but basically found the same information that you highlighted but nothing further I'm afraid.

Today I found a birth and death reference for Joseph so I have applied for the certificates.

I found him on the outgoing passenger by accident and I was a little surprised to find he went the USA to work.

The guy returning in 1929 to live in Blackpool won't be my Joseph.

Have you seen the 1929 Probate Calendar entry?

Joseph Hartley of 5 King Street Blackpool.. died 25 April 1929 at Rose Cottage, Oakworth, Keighley ... probate to widow Mary Alice... and to John William Hartley.

Yes, I did see that but discarded it after finding a death reference in Keighley.

I thought it more likely he would return to Oakworth where he was born and had relatives still living there.

I'll wait till I get the certificates to discover if I made a mistake.

I think I may have seen a different 1929 death.

Just reading the probate calendar now.
