I now have some wills.
Ralph Hodgson of Seaton, who died in 1828, mentions two sons, Robert and Bryan plus wife Mary.  Robert, of Stanley Burn, who died in 1872 mentions brother Bryan (they had the rights to mine coal under land they used to own) so that all ties in nicely.
John Hodgson of Newlands, Wolsingham who died in 1803 does not appear to be connected to Ralph.  He mentions three sons named John, William and Thomas plus daughters Elizabeth and Margaret.

Unfortunately Will do not always have all children names on them, as they could have been a fallen out and that person was not included.

So Ralph could be Johns child.
Lowson, Hodgson, Dent, Townson, Simpson, Brown, Bruce, and many more.

You are right.  I will persevere and see what more I can find.
