CaroleW,

I thought BMD records to about 2008 at least were available at County Record offices and some public libraries, which is why I  asked on RChat.  If I'm wrong I'm not going to get an answer here and tender  my apologies.

Heatherjulie,

Don't know where but I will ask.

Cheers

Just a thought - if the County records office do have them - they may be in a computerised format and therefore quick to search.

You could try ringing to see if that is correct and whether they would be prepared to look for you

Take a look at the GRO site

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/Registeringlifeevents/Familyhistoryandresearch/DG_175464

BMDs are only available online until 2005 (2006 for births). However the GRO has designated 7 sites that have the Births, Marriages and Deaths available to view up until about 18 months from current date (ie 2010 / 2011).

The 7 are spread around the country and are :-

Viewing full copies of the indexes
You cannot buy copies of the GRO indexes, but complete sets are available to view at:

    Birmingham Central Library
    Bridgend Reference and Information Library
    City of Westminster Archives Centre
    Manchester City Library
    Newcastle City Library
    Plymouth Central Library
    The British Library*

If you live near one, pay them a visit. I have used these services with the odd email enquiry to 2 of the listed to find a GRO reference so I then ordered a copy of a certificate online, although the GRO will supply a certificate with a +/- 1 year search without a reference

Thank you HP.
A very useful link, confirming my original thought that BMD records up to 2009 are available at designated locations, including Manchester Library, Elliot House, 151 Deansgate.  So, back to my original question if I may.  Anyone visiting and can do a look-up please?

Regards

Back to my posting, why not email Manchester to look for a record for you, Plymouth and Bridgend answered emails I sent to them

Hi HP,

A quick update.  Took your advice and emailed M/cr Library.   Reply today to advise they will do the look-up for fee (with respect pretty much what I expected but thank you).

Still hopeful some kind soul, if visiting, might do a look-up for me.

Sorry Heather I should have come back to you before.  I asked the question but the lady has no idea.  Thinks it may have been Salford, as she again 'thinks' he died in a home there.

Cheers

I read your post with interest. I am related to the Gouldbourn family. Jonathan Gouldbourn married Emily Siddall, who was my father's sister. They had a son, also called Jonathan, born in 1939 and died in 1997. He had a son called Jonathan once again. I have looked at the birth and death records and this shows Jonathan A Gouldbourn born in 1964 , and died in 2006. Whilst I am not 100% certain that this was the relation I knew in the 60s, the date of birth of 1964 seems to convince me that it was my cousin. We always knew him as little Johnnie. Unfortunately we lost contact many years ago. The last place that Jonathan (born 1939) lived was Nuthurst Road Moston. Apart from that I have no further knowledge than that.
