Surname Turvey
« on: Monday 17 September 12 10:45 BST (UK) »
Hi I wonder if somebody can help me?
I have the surname Turvey in my Maternal Family and I have managed to get back to John Turvey(sometimes spelt Tirvey/Tirvy) 1760(ish), they all came from foulden/pentney area in Norfolk.
I am now stuck and the reason being is that family 'history' has it that the Turvey's came over from germany, but I'm blowed if I can find any info on this story.
Can somebody point me in the right direction of where to look please.

Thank You

My advise (for what it is worth) is to forget the Family story - well, at least to put it on the back burner unless evidence comes up to make it worth looking at again.
You have said yourself you are now stuck, and give the reason that the family somes from Germany.
Perhaps if you keep looking in Norfolk you may not be stuck!! Who knows.

Back in the 1760's parish records tend to become a bit patchy - some are complete and clear, others are messy and illegible.

I dont know where you are, but if at all possible it would be worth going to the Norfolk Record Office and looking through the PR's for the area to see what you can find.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hello,

I agree with lizdb - I would see what I could find as far back as possible with the Norfolk connection.

The earliest baptism I could find in Foulden was for a Judith Turvey, baptised on 8 June, 1788, by a John and Winnifred Turvey. Does that ring any bells?  I'm assuming you don't have a "definite" baptism for John, as you say "1760-ish" ...

I couldn't find a marriage for John and Winnifred though .... I'll have a look at some parishes nearby.

Hi again,

This looks like the right one - Northwold was only a couple of miles away from Foulden.

Hi again,

I've been a while looking at the registers for Northwold and North Pickenham, and come up with nothing for John Turvey's baptism - I'd be interested to know his parents names, and where he was baptised.
