Lampeter-St Sulians-grave check please
« on: Monday 17 September 12 17:12 BST (UK) »
This is a bit of a long shot and a tall order.

I have death certificates stating that
William Williams died 11 Feb 1919
Anne Williams (nee Davies) died 22 Nov 1918

According to burial records I stumbled across they are both buried in St Sulians, Lampeter. They both died in Lampeter. To be honest, I'm not even sure if the church is still there.

I am finding it difficult to locate birth records because the names are so common in that area so wondered if the headstones (if they still exist) might state the birth dates of them.

Is there someone in that area who might be able to check for birth dates for me please?

Many thanks in advance.

Dear Mustfindthem

According to the burial record Anne Williams (nee Davies) was aged 66 years
and William Williams was aged 70 years.

Below is a link to a photo of Silian Church.

http://www.geolocation.ws/v/W/File:Silian Church - geograph.org.uk - 735625.jpg/-/en

Silian is about two and a half miles from Lampeter.

There is a possible baptism for Anne Davies at Silian Parish Church on 28th Nov 1850
Parents :  Father - John Davies (a Farmer) and Mary Davies of Ty'n yr Heol, Silian    (Vicar: David Williams)

Looking at 1851 Census of Ty'n yr Heol  (on Census down as Tynyrhewl, Silian) Piece 2483 Folio 218 Pg 10
John Davies, Head, aged 40 Farmer of 15 acres born Ystrad, Cardiganshire
Mary Davies, wife , aged 29                                born Llandysul Cardiganshire
Sons - David, age 9;  Evan, age 6; Samuel, age 3;  all born Silian Cardiganshire
Daughter - Anne age 7 months born Silian.
Also there was a house servant = Margaret Davies age 16 born Llandysul Cardiganshire

A possible baptism for William Williams - 7th June 1850 at Betws Bledrws
son of  Joseph (a Farmer)  and Sarah Williams of Pantwangoy, Betws Bledrws   (Charles Lloyd, Rector)

Betws Bledrws is also about two and a half miles from Silian.

Hope this helps a little,
Regards, Alltcafan :)

Thank you so much for your time. I couldn't get the link to work but did study the baptisms you mention.

The census I can find indicate that
William was born 1851,1851,1849,1848 in Llanwenog/Llanarth/Pencarreg
Anne was born 1853,1853,1851,1852 always says Llanwenog

Their death certificates indicate a year of birth as William 1851 and Anne 1850

The 1911 census indicates they married in 1876 so I looked for a marriage in the Lampeter area (as that is where they lived when married and is close to where they both say they were born) either side of 1876. There only seemed to be one marriage of a William Williams and an Anne Davies that fitted the picture. Their fathers on that certifcate are Isaac Williams and Evan Davies both labourers.

On marriage Willliam lived in 'Vellindue issaf Pencarreg' (It isn't too clear) and Anne lived in 'Tarrygarrig Silian' (isn't clear either)

I hoped that if the gravestones (if they exist!) gave a date of birth I might be able to narrow down the search a bit more.

Just realised that 'Tarrygarrig Silian' might be Tanygraig Silian

........and 'Vellindue issaf Pencarreg' might be Felindreisaf - which would tie up with 1871 census when he appears to be on a farm with a Timothy D Rees. A Timothy D Rees was a witness on the marriage certificate that I'm not sure about

Hi

I expect to be visiting Silian Church Thursday week.  I will be looking at gravestones and copies of  the Church registers .
I will have a look for you.

The current church was built in 1873.  It is a really pretty church.  The old church had been there since before 1830 when the records began.  We did see a stone inscribed in Latin which had been built into the wall of the new building and is said to have been from the old Church.  There is the original font ,stacked in the corner of the church ,which is covered with Celtic stone carvings.  The new font is the one in use.

Dear Sandra
that would be very kind of you if you could have a look for me please.
Gosh, if the birthdates were there that would be brilliant.

No problem.  I have several to look for so if I see yours I shall photo them.

If you are anywhere near Lampeter, Silian is soo worth a visit!
