In case it wasn't covered in previous related threads:-
To see Coombs Terrace and nearby brickyard on a map go to:-

www.old-maps.co.uk

Use the search term "St.Donats Road"
Select No.1.When the current map loads,go to the historical drop down list on the right and choose 1880 1:2500.Use one off click magnification or Windows zoom facility(200%) to view.

Got it!  I just the wrong 1800 on the right and I can see Coombs Terrace.
Thanks very much Roger.

It looks like the Brick and Tile works associated with Charles Coombes is the one at the direct equivalent of his 1891 census address
Go again to www.old-maps.co.uk and use the search term"60 Penarth Road Cardiff".Select the only option, and when loaded, choose either of the 1880 map options.
I can't find this location in the 1871 census(under Penarth Road or Moors Road?).Perhaps it is amongst the missing pieces, but there must be a reasonable chance that this is where he was resident.
Interestingly, across the road is a "Ship School",and I think the eldest son Abraham is on board ship in Bideford Devon in 1871 - ref  2201 102  0

Hi,
That's very interesting.  I shall have to check up where the other children moved after their parents moved from Coombs Terrace to the Penarth Road.  I wonder if Coombs Terrace was pulled down by 1891 for a new road.  And yes you are right Abraham was in the navy for a short time.  Now I can't find him in 1881 - the search goes on!
Thank you very much for your help and interest, Roger.
Cheers,
Abiam2

Looking again at comparative maps I would say that Coombe Terrace was incorporated into another road, probably the end of North Clive Street,or possibly Wedmore Road in the rectangle formed by the junction of these with Avoca Place.Go back to www.old-maps.co.uk and use the search term "91 North Clive Street Cardiff"and select.Note that in the 1880 1:500 map only Coombe Terrace appears. If you then go to the 1901 1:2500 map you will see the rectangle referred to above and in the middle of the longer parallel sides,5 properties with orientation as in Coombe Terrace.
As for Abraham in 1881,perhaps he was at sea-it might be worthwhile looking for his wife and family.

Thanks for that.  Will investigate.
I cannot find Abraham anywhere in 1881.  I have him in Wales in 1891 living with his wife and children in Windsor Terrace, Penarth Road and working as a labourer.
I wonder if anyone has advice on searching for a mariner?

In 1881 it looks like the rest of Abraham's family, perhaps with an assumption of Elizabeth's father's name,is at 36 Alfred St,Bristol St Paul:-
