Lost again
« on: Monday 24 September 12 21:01 BST (UK) »
Hi, sometime ago I asked for help  on a Michael Fogarty Born abt: 1876, Thurles Co Tipperary, Michael married I believe Mary Grady Born abt: 1899. I sent to Roscommon Records Office for the marriage Cert and they have informed me that they have no record of this marriage, I know Michael and Mary had a daughter Alice born 22 Sept 1911 and also another daughter Mausie/Mary.....One of the kind members on here told me to look on a site as they were listed there and that they had possibly 9 children...now I cant find that reply from this member and I cant remember which site they refered to.

Can anyone please help with any info on this Fogarty family, I know Fogarty is a common name in the above area
Many thanks in advance

Artisann, here is my tuppence-worth for what it is worth.

The only relevant Michael Fogarty / Mary Grady marriage I can find, took place in Thurles in 1889, note 1889. This 1889 date of marriage is far removed from the 1908 date you originally referred to, but I thought I would mention it in case different Michael / Mary Fogartys are being confused here.

There are 10 children baptised to a Michael Fogarty and Mary Grady in Tipperary, the first of which ties in nicely with the 1889 marriage date: Mary 1890, Eliza 1892, Patrick 1894, Michael 1897, Thomas 1899, Ellen 1901, Christina 1903, Jane 1906, Mary 1909, and Alice 1911.

On that basis, the following is a strong contender for the family at house 1 in Gortataggart in 1901:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Thurles_Town/Gortataggart/1715483/

I have tried to find the family in the 1911 census but haven't so far.  Interestingly though, a John and Ellen Fogarty and family are in house 2 in Gortataggart in 1911 - perhaps a co-incidence, perhaps not.

Hello Gaffy
Thank you so much for your kind and helpful reply, I think you may have the right family, the marriage date I first quoted was what was givin to me as we only knew about 2 children to Michael and Mary, which were Mary and Alice and I knew for sure of Alices Birth date ( 1911).
I notice on your info there are 2 Mary's born to Michael and Mary ...?? do you think think the first child died and thats the reason for two Mary's. I wonder why they are not on the 1911 census ?

Once again cant thank you enough  for all your help,

Artisann

Note: in 1901 Michael's age transcribed as 57 but it is written as 37 on actual page-
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001170335/

Have been searching for this family in 1911 and keep coming back to this result although the details, at first, don't match-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tipperary/Thurles_Urban/Brittas_Road/828336

"There are 10 children baptised to a Michael Fogarty and Mary Grady in Tipperary, the first of which ties in nicely with the 1889 marriage date: Mary 1890, Eliza 1892, Patrick 1894, Michael 1897, Thomas 1899, Ellen 1901, Christina 1903, Jane 1906, Mary 1909, and Alice 1911."

In 1901-                      baptisms-                In 1911-
Maryanne (c1891)       Mary (1890)
                               Eliza (1892)
Patrick (c1895)           Patrick (1894)        Michael (c1894)
Michael (c1897)          Michael (1897)       Patrick (c1898)- think Patrick & Michael have been mixed up here
Thomas (1899)       Mary (c1899)- listed as daughter but age in male column
Ellen (1 month)          Ellen (1901)           Nellie (c1901)
May? (c1902)- possibly Mary b.1909 rather than age 9?
                               Christina (1903)      Christina (c1904)
                               Jane (1906)            Jane (c1906)
                               Mary (1909)
Alice (1911)           (born after census taken)

In 1911 I think they put down 7 children/7 living for the number of children actually in the household rather than correct figures.
