Confused with birth and marriage cert??
« on: Thursday 27 September 12 11:16 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, i have a little problem...im tracing my family tree a good while now and i came across my great great grandmother baptismal cert, which i was delighted to get...Her name is Catherine McDonald and on the cert it had her fathers name is Richard Mcdonald....But i have her marriage cert and it says that her father is James McDonald ??? So now i dont know what to be thinking!!!She was baptised 7 September 1851 in rathvilly church, carlow. and she was married in the same church 16 May 1876....
Any ideas as to way this happened would b greatly appreciated:-)
Jenny

Mistakes do happen (my grandfather's uncle has wrong father's name on his marriage certificate) but are you sure the baptism and marriage are for the same person?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

i thought the same that maybe it was a Richard James Mcdonald or vice versa...got the certs off 2 different family members, so decided to contact the church myself for them to check the records and see....the marriage cert is correct with all the details on it, so there could have being more than 1 catherine mcdonald baptised that year....so hopefully hear some news off the church soon :)

Hi,after looking at both the Tithe Applotment Books 1814-1838 and Griffiths Valuation 1848-1864 I found 6 James McDonalds/McDonnells in county Carlow but the only Richard McDonald/McDonnell that appears is in Derrylossary,co Wicklow so I'm thinking perhaps the Catherine you have belongs to him.Kim

Hi,forgot to put this in last post.If it turns out that Catherine's father is James,I found this in the Rathvilly parish registers.
Birth:

James McDonald
born 25 Dec 1829
father:Patt McDonald
mother:Anastatis Molloy
residence:Monavthe

There are also two other McDonalds whose childrens births are being registered in Rathvilly church at this time;James McDonald and Peter McDonald.Hope this helps,Kim

Get her Civil record of marriage. Civil records began in 1864.
Civil Marriage records give father's name of both bride and groom.

Her father might be known by different name s
