Thanks Elaine

Now I have birth dates for Thomas and Catherine and I know they were born in Glasgow  I have something to go on.

I am also interested in Elizabeth Devine. She was my great grandmother. I didn't know she was a grocer. How can I check out where she had her business? Is there a list of businesses in port-Glasgow in the 1880's ?

Regards Orkrad

Not sure if you already have Elizabeths death but....

Elizabeth Devine (was Tolan) died 1900 aged 56 in Port Glasgow.

Not sure if you've checked out this birth for Catherine

1865 GORMAN CATHERINE
GREENOCK OLD OR WEST/RENFREW
564/03 0518

there are a couple more in the Lanarkshire area but she is the only one in Renfrewshire  ???

Who was the informant on his death certificate?

Could the informant have got the parents names wrong?

 Hi everyone

The informant on his death certificate was his cousin Edward Tolin. Since Thomas appears to have lived with various members of the Tolin family at various addresses in Port-Glasgow over a period of thirty years I think the details are probably correct.

However it is always difficult believing details on death certs.
Elizabeth Devine (ms Tolin) who was related to Thomas has her age at death recorded in 1900 as 56. She is in the 1841 census aged 10. Almost 60 years later  she is 56!

Thanks for all your detective work. Thomas's birth  is still  a mystery.
