The Carpenters Arms, Newton Abbot
« on: Tuesday 02 October 12 11:38 BST (UK) »
Can someone with local knowledge tell me if there is still a South Street in Newton Abbot.  I am looking for any information about The Carpenters Arms that was in South Street from 1861 - 1911.  It appears that South Street has now been renamed.  I have contacted one pub in the area with the name of The Carpenters Arms but they seem to think it's not the same one.

Many thanks
Rishile

What were the neighbouring streets in the censuses you have found? Who occupied the pub?

Are you sure it was in the town of Newton Abbot itself as opposed to another parish within the Newton Abbot registration district?

E.g. Tormoham/Torquay which had a Carpenters Arms on South St in 1861: RG9/1412/52/44.

Yes - sorry, it was Tormoham.

I don't know the area at all so the districts are confusing me no end.

In the 1861 census South Street was enumerated immediately after East Street. If you search for South Street Torquay you should get a map up showing a South Street and East Street which intersect with one another.

NB the old parish name of Tormoham was gradually replaced in common usage by the name Torquay - both denote the same place effectively for your purposes.

Hello Rishile
I understand my grandparents, or great grandparents ran the Carpenters Arms in South Street, Tor (now Torquay) back in the late 1800's and early 1900's, they were Jane Pope (widow) at 30 South Street.  It seems when you were asking about this pub, the impressions was given that it was no longer there, but I'm certain it is now The Lansdowne in South Street, Torquay.  I'm pretty certain I have got, or have seen pictures of it when it was named The Carpenters Arms.  I've registered on this site, just to give you this information, and hope to hear back from you, but am not really sure how it works, but I hope this info is helpful.  Kind regards, Joy

Hi FrancesJoy, welcome to Rootschat.  I hope you get this message and I will PM you to try to make sure.

Jane Pope was also my Gt Grandmother (without my notes to hand, I can't be sure of how many 'Gts') but she is definately in my direct line.  Thank you so much for the information.  If you have information that you would like to share, then please PM me.  I think you have to make three posts so just do two more posts (it  an be anything) to this thread.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you Brewins Girl.  I will give them a try.

Best regards
Rishile
