Criminal Registers
« on: Wednesday 03 October 12 05:47 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I have located on ancestry a criminal register entry that I am interested in finding out more.  Details are as follows:

HO27/ 61 p  405.

Charles Quelch age 17 tried in 1840 in Oxfordshire.
Sentence:  Transportation

So, I have printed off the image attached to this ancestry record, which gives the description of the crime as larceny, transported for 7 years.

Now, if he was "transported for 7 years" - where would he have been transported to?  Australia?  I can't find records on ancestry as to where he was transported to and I have been unable to find him on any passenger lists (that is if I am looking in the correct place).
I've tried New South Wales and Tasmania.

I have a strange feeling that he returned to the UK after his 7 years as he is not with his family in the 1841 Cenus but appears in 1851 and married in Oxford in 1847.

Could any rootschatters enlighten me as to how I could find more details in relation to his "criminal activity" and also where he was "transported to" (and possibly a return to the UK).

Regards,

Suzanne

Hi

Charles Quelch and another man Henry Hall stole a gold watch, a pencil case, and a handkerchief the property of  Thomas Green a student at Christchurch.

If you register to the following site you get free credits to newspaper articles, Charles Quelch appeared in the Oxford Journal 4 July 1840.

Thank you so much for your interest in my query and particularly your replies.

I have registered with the newspaper site - thanks for that tip.

Now all I have to do is maybe try a search for Henry Hall to see where he was transported to seeing as I can't find my Charles Quelch.

Will keep you post, but thanks so much for the lead.

Regards,
Suzanne

Could well have been to Bermuda.  My GGgrandfather was transported there in the same year for 10 years.  Those sent to Bermuda were employed building the British naval base and unlike convicts to Australia mostly returned home (or to Aus) after their sentence.  My ancestor was back by the 1851 census.  The records of convicts in Bermuda are in the National Archives.  MaxD

Dear All,

Thank you for your advice.  I managed to view the newpaper article in the Oxford Journal, so my next step is to check out those passenger lists on the information that you provided.

I can't seem to find that you can view the lists online at the National Archives UK for those who were transported to Bermuda.  Any hints?

Will keep you posted.

Cheers,
Suzanne

Hi Suzanne

Unfortunately the records aren't on line. I found my ggrandfather in the HO8 books on a visit to Kew.
