missing Suffolk sailor
« on: Friday 05 October 12 17:14 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find  Harry PALMER  born 1858  in Wetherden (Stow Reg.) Suffolk

He is at home with parents in 1851 and 1871.     Charles Palmer and Sarah Jane nee Copping ,  also  siblings  George born  1857    James  born  1860  Eva Elizabeth  born 1863  and  Susannah Mary  born  1865.

The Census 1881  shows Harry  aged 23 on board  H.M.S.  Lord Warden  as an  Able Seaman  from then on I can find no sign of him.

Did he die on board or jump ship on his travels ?

I would be very grateful for any help.

The 1901 Harry Palmer is not the same man.   He married - as Henry aged 22 - Martha Main 7/9/1879 St. Pauls Church, St. Mary Newington and his father is shown as Robert Palmer, Shoemaker.

1861 Census at Stowmarket shows the family with 'Harry' as Henry Palmer aged 1 - ref. RG9 - 1147 - 64 - 11.

Just for the sake of my sanity can you post the reference for Harry the sailor on the 1881 Census as I simply can't find him?

Thank you all for your help and time.

Cath151    You are a star. that is the first clue I have had since the 1881 Census. I will be following it up  tomorrow.

Sandiep    I went down the same road as you until I realised that 'Harry' was born to Charles and Sarah in Wetherden  1958   and Henry was born to Robert and Emma in Stowmarket in 1860.   So close in time and location.

Annette   I don't have the Reference  to hand but the ship was in port in Scotland.  That should save you sanity,  being right up your street so to speak.

I thought you would like to know that I have acquired the service records for Harry Palmer and this shows he enlisted at age 15 and completed 21 years service.  This brings him up to 1894.
I think he may then well have emigrated to one of the countries he visited on his travels.. Who knows !!

Thanks again

Was he still single?     there are a number of Harry Palmers going to USA on FindMyPast but I cant see a way of identifying yours unless we can find him in US census.
I expect he will turn up when least expected......taken me years sometimes to find someone and some I still hiding!

I do not know if he was single as it does not seem to say on his Navy records. Having said that,  they are not easy to read.

As you say maybe the U S Census may reveal something.

Thank you for your input.
