A bit of tricky one!
« on: Sunday 14 October 12 08:21 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to find the birth, death and parentage of a man called Edward Griffiths.
I am unsure of his birth, but he married Doris Davies in Dec 1928 in Wolverhampton.
Then preceded to have four children, all of whom have now passed away, Kathleen in 1929, Dennis in 1930, Margaret in 1932 and Edward in 1934.
Now he died during the war,  but I am completely unsure of what year or where exactly. All I can offer is that after a search on BMD it shows his name as being 'Edward Griffiths' without any middle names.
Could someone try and find his death record, then hazard a guess at his birth and parentage?
Thank you in advance
Regards,
Joel

P.S my previous assumption was that he was born in 1905, showing up on the census living with his parents, Edward and Alice Spencer? which seemed a bit odd really, considering the difference in surnames, but i believe Griffiths was Alice's surname
This assumption is also based on the fact that he was living in Great Brick Kiln street, which is the street in which his children grew up.

Surely the first step would be to buy the marriage certificate?

That will (probably!) give you his age, and his father's name.

But I'm a student and abit strapped for cash at the moment :)

So buying the certificate is out of reach for me for now :(

There are several Edward Griffiths born 1900-1910 in Wolverhampton according to Free BMD.

As it is highly probable that 1911 was the first census for him and we cannot post details from that, it is going to be difficult for you.

You say he died during the war but you are not sure where. Where was the rest of his family in those years?

It does look as though you are going to have to save up for that certificate  :(

Ohhh I see
Well his family was in Wolverhampton, and his wife went on to remarry and have two more children
He died In battle, my great grandmother, Edwards daughter, had the letter reporting his death
But I have no idea where that letter would be now , all I know was that he died overseas

Maybe :(

I ws just checking the CWGC site  - http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead.aspx?cpage=1 - as you say a tricky one.
You could look through these for any clues.

If we assume he was at least 16 when he got married (I'm not sure of the ages for marriage back then) and that was 1928, he would of been at least 28 when the war started
If that's true, then none of the army dead would match
I'll have a look through the other forces casualties

Hi Fraser

I would ask any of your family member's ie cousin/aunt/uncle's anyone you can think of ,to see if they have any information that could help, there maybe some Army Medal's/ BMD'S or other records that could help.

Other than that as Heywood says you will have to get the MC
