rowland gwynn 1861 look up please

hi can you help me find rowland or roland gwynn born about 1811 monmouthshire wales on 1861 census i cannot find him, he should have a son william herbert gwynn born 1860,got him on other census 1841 and 1851 hes in trevethan monmouthshire,1871 and 1881 he's in staffordshire cheers

I do not see him on the 1861 census but he must be there I assume you have the following I tried to track him here is what I found
 1841 census surname spelled Gwin wife Sophia,
1851 census surname spelled Gwynn wifes name Tabitha big difference in age!
Rowland Gwynn =m= Tabitha Mortimer 2nd qtr 1850 monmouthshire
poss deth of Tabitha 4 th qtr 1858 Dudley staffordshire
1871 census surname Gwynn wife Ann
Birth Herbert Gwynn 2nd qtr 1863 Leek staffordshire

Rowland Gwynn =m= Annie Wilkins 3rd qtr 1870 Wolstanton staffordshire
 I note that on 1881 census he is given as father-in-law  Rhoda was the daughter of ann Wilkins who he married , i note she lived in  Trevethin Momouthshire when married to her first husband.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I just do not see him I have also looked for his children his son Rice that must ahve been a nickname don't see his birth under that name poss James?

Herbert is listed as b Pontypool c 1861 on both 1871 and 1881 (latter as Grey on Ancestry, living with Annie b Newport Mon))

Rice is a fairly common attempt at transcribing Rhys or Rees into English

thanks to you both everything you have found is what i have did you say herbert is down as herbert grey and not gwynn on the 1881? living with annie, also son rhys born 1836 found him in the merchant navy but no death for him thanks again

found the 1881 census herbert living with mother down as gray not gwynn i did not have this and it looks like its him, only trouble his father rowland is down as widower living with his step daughter rhoda ede on the 1881 unless he is just visiting?

There's a couple of trees on Ancestry with various bits relating to this family - difficult to judge how much trust to put in a lot of the info, apart from the marriage cert for William Herbert Gwynn in 1882 to Mary McGee - father Rowland (and they  goes on to have a  daughter Rhoda)

For instance one says mother Annie, the other mother Tabitha. One says Tabitha dies 1863 (no ref)

You may be having trouble because familysearch.org transcribed the Gwynn family of Lavernock, Glamorganshire, with their father's Christian name as their surname, e.g., John Gwynn is listed as John David, (his father was David Gwynn, m. Mary George, and the George children are listed as "James" after her father James George).   John Gwynn went to St. Andrews, where he married Catherine "Kitty" Andrew, and lived in the same area as the Rowland family, so you might find the connection in the Merthyr to Pont-y-pridd area.
