Gateside - Whitburn
« on: Friday 19 October 12 17:57 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know where in Whitburn that Gateside was? I have a few documents with one of my great great grandfather's details, which say he's living there. There's a Gateside Road nowadays. I'm guessing this is possibly a road which leads to where this used to be. It's obviously mining housing at the time of the last century he stayed there. It's listed after Hawthorn Cottages and West Port in the 1911 census. Not sure if that's any help. There used to be a good Whitburn community website, but sadly it no longer appears to exist.

Hi Iain,

Gateside looks to have been pretty much where Gateside Road is nowadays.

1890s OS map showing Whitburn

current streetmap of Whitburn

I have Gateside, Whitburn in my Paterson (births of first two children of Thomas Paterson and Ann Brodie) family line in the late 1880s.

Thanks ADP. That's very handy.

Will need to start looking at those maps more. Gateside was still there in 1933 when my great great grandfather died.

Hi ADP

Thomas YG Paterson and Ann Brodie were my great great grandparents through their son Robert who was born in Gateside in 1887.

Have we linked up before? Perhaps on other sites?

I think that we have linked up in the past - it may have been some years back. My g-g-grandfather Robert Graham Paterson was Thomas Y G Paterson's eldest brother.
