Essex 9th Battalion Regiment WW1
« on: Saturday 20 October 12 16:44 BST (UK) »
I recently discovered my great, great uncle was a Lt.Cpl in the 9th Battalion Essex Regiment and wondered whether anyone has any pictures, information, records on this Regiment. If so it would be very useful to discover about his wartime experience. Even just learning that one of you had a relative in the regiment would be great!
Thanks!  :)

If you scroll down to 9th Battalion it will give basic information. To get more detailed information you should follow the link to his division - http://www.1914-1918.net/12div.htm

If he went to France before the end of 1915 his medal card will give you the date and you can then research the battles he would have been involved in. If he went over in 1916 or later you should post his name and number and someone may be able to tell you when he enlisted.

Thank you! He did go before 1915 and only lasted 5 months, but unfortunately we have limited info and have no idea where his medals are and any other information. We have the bare basics really!

The Regimental museum is in Chelmsford, see http://www.chelmsford.gov.uk/essexregimentmuseum - looking at the website there is an outside chance they'll know something about him. But if you could visit the Museum I'm sure you'd be able to pick up a lot of background info.

Hi Dar,
Not sure if you can help, I was given as a gift Royal British Legion Somme 1916 lapel pin, these pins are to Commemorate an individual who died at the battle of the Somme,

The soldier that the pin relates to is 10369 Private G A T Cowlyn 9th Service Batt ESSEX Regiment, he was killed on the 14 August 1916 and is buried at Varennes Military Cemetery.

I see you have a copy of the War Diary, would it be possible for you to give me some information on where the Batt was leading up to the 14 Aug 16 please

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

regards
Norman

Does this help.
It looks like he died from wounds probably from shelling over the previous 2 days.
Working on recently captured German trench system indicated in yellow.
This trench was captured by 9/Essex on the 10th. so possible he was wounded at that time.
