Grammar Schools in Llanelly
« on: Sunday 29 May 05 17:00 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

My late grandfather was a grammar school boy, and I'm trying to find out how many grammar schools are in the Llanelly area (My grandfather was born in Pwll and would have attended grammar school in the early 1930's).

Could anyone offer some advice on this matter?

Thanks for reading :).

Best wishes,

There were 2 grammar schools in Llanelly when I attended the Girls Grammar school in 1960. The girls school was many miles from the boys grammar school which was near Pwll. The boys grammar is now a 6th form college. I don't know whether they were in one building in the 30s though.

Hi Welsh Chris

Just looked in on this topic as it is Llanelly and I have some relations who lived at The Graig/Graig Cottage/Graig Villa, Llanelly in various census returns.  Is it an area or just a building?  Would the present 6th form college be the building I have listed for my census family?

Regards

Hi, "Graig" is a common word in Welsh place names, it means hill. It's possible that your family lived in that area before buidings were demolished to build the secondary school.

Thanks for the reply - I forgot to come back to you.
The house was called The Graig or Graig Villa but no street name which is not very helpful!

Hi Honeybun, There is a house in Llanelli variously known as Y graig and Graig Cottage. It is in a street called Caswell Street. Up until the 1960's it was inhabitated by a family called Williams who had owned a timber importing business It is still a private house.
