Hi ,

If James Wood was the brother of Margaret Gordon Wood(born 1874) then I think he would have been born between 1881 and 1885
Parents were Alexander Wood and Jane McReddie.
Scotlandspeople has a death for Jane Wood(other surname McReddie) 1885 Montrose , Angus , born c1852

There is also this entry in 1901. I thought this entry might connect with the names:

Isabella Wood 58, Dresser Own Asst.,  b. Fordoun, Kincardineshire
Maggie Jane/Wood 22, Sampstress b. Montrose
James Wood 17, ironmonger...would fit with golf club maker in later years, b. Montrose

Address: N W Bridge Rd Free Chuan School House, Montrose

Just adding a little more...

Not sure if James Wood as you describe fits with the family of Margaret Gordon Wood  :-\

As confirmed by Ev earlier, parents' details for Margaret Gordon Wood indicate these census entries (including the early death of mother/wife Jane in 1885):

1881:
Alexander Wood 36, farm serv. b. Fettercairn, Kinkardinshire
Jane Wood 29,
Robert Wood 8
Margaret G Wood 6
Jane Wood 5
Isabella Wood 3
Alexander Wood 6 Months
Address: Cot House Of Braidestone, Airlie, Angus

1891:
Alexr Wood 40, Crofter & Paiting Contractor b. F Cavin, Kincardine
Robt Wood 18
Margr Gordon Wood 16
Jane Wood 15
Isabella Wood 15
Alexr Wood 10
Address: No 125 Back Close N E Rd, Montrose

Margaret G Wood working away from home in Montrose for 1891.

Ron, how sure are we about a James being part of this family?

Margaret Gordon Wood died in 1934 aged 59. Her son William reported her death.

There is no James Wood showing on the 1911 search index in Montrose aged 20-30, so, hard to say really.

Hi Monica  Except for the age of Alexander in 1891[ He was 22 when he married Jane ] all I agree with
1901 a Margaret G Wood was a domestic servant at 20 Victoria St Arbroath, family of Barbara L & daughter Lizzie Jane Yule
1903  When William born at 14 Forth ?st.  Montrose she was a domestic servant aged 26 [ on son William's BC ]  i.e. BORN  1877 FATHER UNKNOWN She never married see her burial rec.
1934 Jan 22nd died at the Infirmary, Tarrybank St Vigeans
On burial Register.  Internment reg No 5825 , M 177, 5ft deep, paid.  Name Margaret Gordon Wood, age 59, B Kirriemuir ,single, died of heart failure following an operation for internal prolapse . Was domiciled at Tarrybank Infirmary, Arbroath.
Son William worked at Tarrybank according to Charles Johnston's letter
1911 census William is in Montrose a 7y old boarder family of Peter & Jane Harvey, 4 children, at 3 Academy Square Montrose
1911 She was a servant to Henry Peter age 78, farmer, of Tilly Gloom Farm House, Parish of Brechin [Landward]  Age 36 Born Kingoldrum, a Domestic Housekeeper. Brechin is mentioned in letters from Charles Johnston to her son William
NOTE  dated 21st Nov 1978 In a letter from a child hood friend Charles Johnson [ B 1904] of 31 St.Johns Cottage Montrose, From the way the letter starts "Willie" must have written to the Arbroath Herald Paper. Mentions his UNCLE Jimmy Wood who was a Golf Club maker & worked for the Co-Op in the high St. Montrose been dead for many years but still has family living a son "Timber Wood" works for Glaxo Laboratories. & a daughter.
No one has any knowledge of William Wood [1903-1980] father so his name is his mothers maiden name. BC MC & DC all nil father known.
James may be a brother of a substitute father.
I was hopping to find desc.of James to see if anyone had kept any letters photos etc. Thanks for your interest would you like my Email  I thought some of Charles Johnston's Desc may like to see these 3 letters  RON

Very little info to go on given that Wood is a very common surname and I doubt he actually named his son Timber?

What other info do you have on him?
