Visiting Oxhill
« on: Saturday 27 October 12 06:08 BST (UK) »
I live in Melbourne, Australia and for over 25 years I have been studying my family history.  My 7x great-grandfather was William Walton who was born in approx 1662 in Oxhill to William Walton and his wife, Alice (nee Martin).  Others have researched the family back a further few generations.

"My" William Walton and his three brothers, Nathaniel, Thomas and Daniel travelled to Pennsylvania, USA where they became the founding members of a settlement there.

I am planning a 6 week visit to England in July/August 2013 to visit a number of places connected with my family history.  I will be staying in Stratford-Upon-Avon for 3 nights and intend to visit Oxhill.

I am interested in knowing if there might be any records relating to early Oxhill and the Walton family in particular, still in existence and where I would need to go to see them.

Any help/advice on this or other places that might be worth visiting would be most appreciated. (I am relying on public transport during my visit)

Thank-you.

Hello Anne
Have you seen this:
http://www.oxhill.org.uk/ChurchRegisters/Registers.htm
& this:
http://www.oxhill.org.uk/ChurchRegisters/MemorialInscriptions/Page01.htm
Having a quick look at this one reveals several memorials to Waltons:
section B
Pages 35,41 & 42
section c
pages 24,25,26,27,29 & 31,there may be others.
There is a local history group near to Oxhill who have an interest so you may want to contact them as they will give you a lot more local information:
http://www.avondassett-pc.gov.uk/avondassett-1737.cfm?source=left
I think they should be your first port of call.
Any records that exist will in all probability be held at the Warwick CRO:
http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/countyrecordoffice
You could contact them & ask what records they hold for Oxhill.
It will depend on what sort of family they were.If they held land there may be Tithe appointments relating to the family.
A visit to St. Lawrence's Oxhill would be the place to go while there.
Many of the old buildings still exist & if your lucky you may be able to pinpoint where some of the family lived if they were landholders.

Hi Anne,
Some years back you were doing some research on the Waltons from Oxhill UK and Pennsylvania US and were taking a trip to Oxhill. I'm wondering if you discovered any burial places or homes....William Sr. and Alice Martin are my 9x great grandparents. Thank you for your posting!

Best,
Christie

Hi Anne!

Were you able to gather any information about the Waltons during your visit to Oxhill?

William & Alice were also my 9x Grandparents 😊

Would love to chat with you as I am planning a visit as well.
Thanks!

Hi Bethany,

No, I didn't get any information but did have a visit to the wonderful little church there.

Which of the 4 brothers are you descended from?

Me too.
My line goes Willima (1662) - Job (1706) - Isaiah (1736) - Nicholas 1775) - John (c.1808) - Isaac (1829). These people were all born in America.

My 2x great-grandfather, Isaac (1829) came to Australia in 1849.

Happy to share info and have a public tree on Ancestry.
