I found the 3 suburbs in an online book about maps and street names for Montreal in the 1850's. Of course, stupid me didn't write down the name of the book and now I can't find it again.

Well darn, Val, I'm drawing a complete blank on the names of those suburbs in Montreal. I'd really like to know, though, as I'm from Montreal and have never heard of them.

However, there were (still are I think), Saint Lawrence and Saint Louis wards in Montreal. No Peter/Pierre though. I wonder if that could be what you were thinking of?

So many of the names are gone now, they've all been changed to reflect the militant french political climate. I really miss the old British names as they are such a part of Canadian history :-\

Cheers,

found the book but it was a bit earlier than 1861

Architecture and Town Planning in Colonial North America
Volume 3
by James D. Kornwolf

books.google.ca/books?isbn=0801859867
page 1275

I almost always write down the sites but this time didn't bother.

Good work in finding all the family members.

Hello china and val
thanks for all you have found for me today.
I have had another look at the two letters.
In 1860 Mary Martin nee MacDonald says that she has three children living and five dead. "The oldest is the one I had with me when I was at home (in Scotland?) and I called her after my mother (Ann) the next I have is a boy nearly 8 years old and the youngest is a baby one year and 4 months." "My husband was discharged from the army more than 5 years ago".
In 1889, Mary's grand daughter Marion Ferguson writes "my grandmother is well and looks as young as any of us and she lives with her one single daughter Charlotte. Her other daughter Lizzie is married and has one little girl. My mother is her eldest daughter and my father John Ferguson is a stone mason."
So it would seem as though you have found the right family for me. Many thanks again for all your help.

Aha, good information!

So Ann is the oldest, pre-1850, James is next, 1852, and then Charlotte 1860. But Mary is writing in 1860 and the baby is over a year old, so it has to be Bridget.

AAAAGHHH....Ancestry is down for maintenance. I'll have to try again in the morning.

Good find, PB...I could NOT find Elizabeth. Tried Elizabeth, Eliza and even Lizzie. But there she is.

Interesting that the priest wrote Elizabeth MacDonald in the margin, then crossed out MacDonald and wrote Martin. The father is noted as absent from the baptism. Easy to jump to conclusions, but I suppose we shouldn't try to read anything into it :)
