Emily Whittock of Midsomer Norton
« on: Monday 30 May 05 14:59 BST (UK) »
Hello.
According to her marriage cert. to John Ashman in M.S.N in 1884 her father was
Benjamin Whittock.  The only census i've been able to find an Emily on is 1871 aged 4.with a father Benjamin. She appears on 1901 census with husband John &
several children. She's not on 1881 census with family ,though an Emily died aged 9
between the 2 census's

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hello Lady Hendon

Could you give us the details you've found on the 1901 census? It might help in the hunt for intermediate information!

Thanks

I've had more of a hunt for Emily in 1881 but I'm afraid I can't find her. There are a couple of possiblities but nothing connects.

I can post her father's details in 1851 - 1871, if you haven't already got those.

Sorry  :(

The details i have for Benjamin Whittock is from Somerset Coalfields connections:-
B. 1833 Missomer Norton
D. Apr 1898 The County Asylum,Wells, Somerset
1871 Census:-  Halls Cottages,Compton Lane MSN
Benjamin        Head   37     Coal Miner
Ann                 wife     30
Frederic          Son      15     Coal Miner
John               Son       11
Elizabeth        Daug     6
EMILY             Daug     4
William           Son        1            All born MSN.
Is this what you've got?

This Emily appears to have died aged 9!!!Which would be in 1876.It makes no
sense to buy her Birth cert, until i solve the other problems!!

Her Husband John Ashman (again according to coalfield records)was never Married
to Emily Whittock, but to Emma Maggs in 1893!!

Nightmare or what?

Thanks for all your help

Alison

Hi Alison

I can see the frustration   ::)

To tackle the last problem first - there is indeed a John Ashman who married an Emma Maggs - they appear in the 1901 census as still living in Midsomer Norton. That John Ashman was born and brought up in Midsomer Norton and worked in the mines there. The John Ashman who married Emily appears to have come from Monmouth originally. I have found 2 of these of almost the same age, both working in the mines. One had a father George and spent most of his early life in Midsomer Norton, despite being born in Monmouthshire; the other had a father William and was largely brought up in Wales. Each family spent time in both places and married people from both places.   ;D

However, I'm sure we can unpick this and I'm happy to carry on trying, if you like.

I've checked the original image of the 1871 census and  it agrees with what you have.

The nearest I can find to your Emily in 1881 are -
1) Emily Wettock from Midsomer Norton, who's a Domestic servant in the household of Eliza Vincent at 20 Sydney Buildings, Bathwick. Unfortunately, her age is given as 18 when she should be more like 15 - I checked the handwriting and I'm sure it's 18 (they could have got it wrong, I suppose)
2) Emily Whettock or Whetlock aged 14 from Midsomer Norton, servant at 5, the Pavement, Lewisham in the household of William Clark, a chemist (who was living in Midsomer Norton in 1871) I think this one is the most likely.

I was wondering whether it was worth posting a query about the death of the 9 year old Emily. If someone has access to Parish records, it's just possible that the names of the parents were given.

Sorry this is a bit rambly but I wanted to contribute everything I could think of.

Regards

Angela

Thanks for that - I was beginning to think i was going mad!!!
John Ashman's father was George Ashman a miner according to his marriage cert. to Emily Whittock. John was 24 & Emily 19. in dec. 1884.

I will post a note about the death of 9 year old Emily Whittock

Hi Alison

It would be so much easier if only our ancestors were a bit more considerate in naming their children and in leaving records - and all this is without even trying. It gets really fun when they are actively hiding things - I now get really suspicious if any of my ancestors got married in Bath as each time this has happened so far there's been something dodgy about the marriage :)

Anyway, here's the John we think it is in 1861 -

Ref RG9 1680 Folio 94 Page 33
Address 21 Middle Row, Clandown,Midsomer Norton
Details
George Ashman - Head -Mar -  34 - Coal Miner - Born Somerset, Midsomer Norton
Dina Ashman - Wife - Mar - 33 - - Born Somerset, Midsomer Norton
Deborah Ashman - Dau - - 11 - Scholar - Born Somerset, Midsomer Norton
Charles Ashman - Son-  - 5 - Scholar - Born Monmouth, Abercarn
William Ashman - Son - -  3 - - Born Monmouth, Abercarn
John Ashman - Son - - 1 - - Born Monmouth, Blina
John Ashman - Lodger - Unmar - 26- Coal Miner - Born Somerset, Midsomer Norton

(Just how many John Ashmans can there possibly be?  ::) )

Then in 1871 -
Ref RG10 2472 Folio 100 Page 37
Address  Middle Row, Clandown, Midsomer Norton
Details

George Ashman - Head - Mar - 43 - Coal Miner - Born Somerset, Midsomer Norton
Dinah Ashman - Wife - Mar - 42 -  - Born Somerset, Midsomer Norton
Charles Ashman - Son -- 15- Coal Miner - Born Wales, Abercorne
William Ashman - Son - - 13 - Coal Miner - Born Wales, Abercorne
John Ashman - Son- - 11 - Coal Miner - Born Somerset, Clandown
Thomas Ashman - Son - - 9 - Scholar - Born Somerset, Clandown
Kezia Ashman - Dau - - 7 - Scholar - Born Somerset, Clandown
Giles Ashman - Son - - 3 - Scholar -  Born Somerset, Clandown

(As for John's place of birth - I think they're more likely to remember it right when he's the most recent child!)

And 1881 -

Ref RG11 2428 Folio 102 Page 3
Address  Dyers Close,  Midsomer Norton
Details
George Ashman - Head - Mar - 54 - Coal Miner - Born Somerset, Midsomer Norton
Dinah Ashman - Wife - Mar - 53 - - Born Somerset, Midsomer Norton
John Ashman - Son - Unmar - 21 - Coal Miner - Born Wales, Blina
Thomas Ashman - Son - Unmar - 19 - Coal Miner - Born Somerset, Midsomer Norton
Giles Ashman - Son - - 12 - Scolar - Born Somerset, Midsomer Norton

I can look up both families in 1851 and possibly 1841 if this would help.

Keep hanging in there!

Regards

Angela
