ELLIS NAME CHANGE

Can anyone please tell me why my ancestors surname changed from Thomas 1700's his son became Richard 1736 and his son became Ellis 1766

That'll be the patronymic naming system at work.

Richard Thomas (son of Thomas XYZ) sons will be called:

Ellis Richard, who son in turn will be:

ABC Ellis.
