I live in Wanganui. I have been to the local Heritage Library and looked up a card index of entries relating to newspaper entries. The following references are there relating to the Goaters.
Elizabeth Jane Goater  D Dec 21 1986  88 years
George Henry Goater   D Aug 8 1936   66 years  Living at Rapanui Road Wanganui. (this is near Westmere , about 8 km out of Wanganui.)
G H 's son  Claude Roland
C R's son  James Henry
Others related are
Barry )
Clarice
Steven
Bruce
Bruce Jr (Bruce's son)
I went and saw Bruce Jr who said that he didn't think any family tree had been done,so he sent me to Steven who confirmed that. Bruce Jr is going to England in June this year.
Those names listed above Steven are all deceased. Steven told me that he believes that there are only about 8 Goater families in NZ and all related. You can get copies of the newspaper cuttings about these people by e-mailing a request to the Heritage Library ,Wanganui. Google it. Hope this helps.

Wow Big Guy

Thanks so much for taking all that trouble to find out information for me I'm extremely grateful.

It's great to know that the GOATER name is still going strong in New Zealand.

I wonder if I sent you my email by private message if you would be able to pass it on to Bruce or Steven. If they were interested in getting in touch I'd be happy to let them have information on their English family.

Best wishes and many thanks again

Maria  ;D

Hi Big Guy,

If you are in communication with the family, could you perhaps enquire if they have a photograph of James we could use for our project? There was only one Goater in the entire NZEF!

Regards
Matt
The Onward Project aims to publish a photograph of every member of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force that served overseas between 1914-1918. If you have a photograph we would love to see it! onwardnzef.book[at]gmail.com

What a lovely idea Matt, I'd love to see a photo of James (or George Henry Charles to give him his full title).

best wishes

Hi Maria
Elizabeth Jane Satchwell who married George Henry Charles Goater was my father's sister i.e. my aunt although I have little memory of her & Geoge died before I was born.    I do have some info of the Goater family in NZ.   A couple of things you may wish to check out are two deaths for Ada M Goater on freebmd (Dec qtr 1934 aged 47 at Potsmouth 2b 698) & (Dec qtr 1938 aged 61 Bournmouth 2b 884) = 1938 less 61 i.e. born circa 1877.   The only shipping records I can find are for Jas Goater 1910 London to NZ; J Goater 1919 Plymouth to NZ & James Goater 1920 Plymouth to NZ born 1869 (which ties in with the date of Geo H C Goaters date of birth 1868 & his date of death 1936 aged 66)  Looks like from Wanganui Chronicle records he was also an Athlete.   If you would like to send me a pm I'd be happy to send you a pdf file for the Goater info I have.
