Researching the McGrath family of Castleshannon, Ballyheigue, Co. Kerry.
« on: Tuesday 13 November 12 17:19 GMT (UK) »
Hoping to connect with descendants of the following McGrath family members:

  • Mary - born about 1884, emigrated to St.Louis, Missouri in 1908
  • William - born about 1886, emigrated 1910
  • James - born about 1888, emigrated 1911
  • George - born about 1890, emigrated 1925
  • Thomas - born about 1896, emigration date unknown
  • Patrick - born about 1901, emigrated 1924

Thomas is thought to have migrated via Canada to St.Louis and thence to California. All the others migrated via Cobh (Queenstown) to New York. Some may have travelled onward to St.Louis, where their sister Ellen emigrated to in 1907.

Since they all seem to have gone to America and you are looking for descendants I'm wondering if this post wouldn't be better placed on the U.S. board?

Rootschat doesn't allow posting details of living/possibly living people and the children of this family could still be alive.

However, the most recent U.S. census is now 1940 which should be a help to you. Have a look at www.familysearch.org to see lots of U.S. databases including census records.

some of the details dont quite match up, but I was thinking this was the family...

 1911- Magrath household, Castleshannon townland

and in 1901

  Magrath household, Castleshannon townland

Parents for this household are Thomas and Johanna

I think the parents full names are Thomas McGrath and Johanna  Burkett... fairly distinctive surname for Johanna which should help identify the family and assist in tracing children...

SuasAnAbhainn, I do not know what information you already have & what you are hoping to discover.

In 1910 Census Ellen McGrath (Dee) is in St Louis Ward 28, St Louis City Misouri with her husband Daniel Dee b. Ireland 1874. Child Helen Dee 3 months & sister Mary McGrath a.23 arrived 1908.

Helen Dee (Ellens daughter) married John Michael Mohan 1910-1966.
They had 2 daughters (still living so details not available)
1 son John Michael Mohan Junior 1935-2004 (his family details not available as still living) :)

Many Thanks for all the replies - much appreciated!

I'm hoping that one of the descendants might just happen to be tracing their ancestry, discover this notice and make contact.

Relentlessly optimistic!  :)

Cheers,
SuasAnAbhainn.
