Conquest family in Bedfordshire
« on: Thursday 15 November 12 13:08 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
For some years I have been researching my Conquest ancestors and have made very good progress, but have never been able to get back further than Thomas Conquest born about 1706 in Cardington, married to Judith Bettle.  However, since getting on line at home, rather than using library computers, I have subscribed to Ancestry, where several trees have this branch going back to Sir Richard Conquest of Houghton Conquest and further.
I can't find anyone with any evidence of the truth of this, and I am sceptical about it.
I wonder what other Rootschatters think.

Hi Ann

I have my tree on Ancestry but there are no sources listed as my thinking is that while they may be related to a lot of people the actual research is mine.  Saying that, if anyone asks how I've come to my conclusions I gladly share the info with them.

As far as I am aware at the moment our trees aren't linked so may I suggest that you ask them.  I have done this many times as I take their info as a sign post and then go and check things for myself.

If they are genuine they will reply.

I hope this helps

Hi Half Pint
Thanks for your reply, yes I have asked some of the tree owners, but haven't had any replies as yet.  I shall await with interest! Ann

... never been able to get back further than Thomas Conquest born about 1706 in Cardington

What's the evidence that he was born in Cardington? Beds at a reasonable guess perhaps, but as I can't see any Conquests in Cardington before the marriage I question whether Thomas was born there. Whilst it's another reasonable supposition that he was connected somehow to the well known Conquest family, proving it is another matter. And as for the Ancestry trees that show Thomas as being born in Cardington in 1706 but baptised in Pirton six years earlier, they demonstrate why I place no reliance on Ancestry trees! The first might be a typo, but the rest? The sheep mentality! The absence of sources does not add to my confidence as to their reliance.bility

I'd look to see if wills might shed any light on the family

David

Hello David

Thanks for your input, yes sorry you are right that there's no evidence for Thomas having been born in Cardington - from memory when posting, I thought that I'd found him in Cardington Parish Records, but as you say, it was his marriage to Judith Bettle which took place there.

It seems you are as sceptical as me about some Ancestry family trees! Only all right if you can check the facts yourself.

Not some. Most. And the further back you go the more doubtful they become, particularly if they emigrated to America

Hi,
I think I've heard it all now!  A cousin in Australia has just informed me that his research into the Conquest line and also that of his maternal line both lead back to 'Richard 1st, 3rd Duke de Normande, 933-996'.  Talk about wishful thinking!
I have told him that I can't prove anything about our Conquest line before the marriage of Thomas to Judith Bettle, but doubt if it will make any difference!  Oh well, I don't suppose I can influence what he wants to believe!
