Hello listers
I think I know the answer to this question before I ask it, but here goes.
Has anyone ever heard of a Ballymeath in Aghadowey or indeed anywhere in County Londonderry?
I found Meath Park and Ballymenagh but no Ballymeath
The time period I'm dealing with is 1690-1710  Williamite War period.
any advice would be appreciated
best wishes
Robert

It this, or something similar, the basis of Ballymeath? A quick reading of the document shows some possible errors/assumptions.

 Hi Aghadowey

No

Ballymenagh seemed as close as I could get to anywhere sounding like Ballymeath.

Then I discovered the house Meath Park {which seems to be 19th century} but I'm wondering where the name came from?

The source of Ballymeath being the birthplace in 1688 of a Gawn Riddel an emigrant to Londonderry, Newhampshire pre 1754, is  information drawn from American sources.
As an aside : Gawn Riddel's mother was Janet Gordon.

I'm attempting to see if such a place as Ballymeath does or did really exist or if it was mis-transcribed or mis-interupted at the time.
Many people have tried without success to identify this place "Ballymeath Londonderry"

regards
Robert

It seems as though you didn't read the document I posted the link to?

Ballymenagh is a townland but Meath Park is a property in the townland of Ballybrittain.

In the 1831 census there is a John Riddle in Ballybritton townland (and in Ballybrittan in 1833 Tithe Applotment Book). Stipend List for Aghadowey Presbyterian Church has a John Riddle in 1832 (left May 1853). This is probably the same John Riddle whose wife Martha died 4 July 1842 aged 50 years (gravestone St. Guaire's Parish Church). Nearby there were Riddles in Lisnamuck townland.

Your correct Aghadowey I didn't see any document. I came into this conversation half way through
however your reply has been very helpful

I'll start on this search soon and check out all things Aghadowey including the census etc.

My man is born 1688 an almost impossible date for local Church records etc
but ending up in Londonderry New Hampshire as they did, I feel they may have been, or been relatives of, a Rev McGregor congregation family. I will need to look into that.

Thanks again
Robert

ps {I take it there is no such place as Ballymeath in Aghadowey!}

Not all the families that left with McGregor were part of his Aghadowey congregation but the only surviving record from that period is the Session Book (original now in Presbyterian Historical Society).

Thanks very much Aghadowey for your efforts, I appreciate it

I know Valerie Adams in the PHS. I wonder is there a detailed list of those who left.
Maybe, maybe not.   Maybe I'll ring her.
She only worked part time so catching her can be the thing

The migration to America continued to grow in numbers for the early part of the 18th century. These Riddels may not have been in the initial wave, but could have joined extended family already established in Londonderry.
I note that a 2nd ship left with Aghadowey emigrants 7 years after McGregor
so I'm sure there were others.

I'll spend a day or two poking through stuff at PRONI, see if anything pops out!

best regards
Robert

No known list of those who left with McGregor. More details will be found in New Hampshire records than on this side of the Atlantic. Several of the early Londonderry histories were republished a number of years ago. Not sure if they are still available but Leach Library did sell them at one time.
