William Trotter 1836-1910, Kelso
« on: Wednesday 21 November 12 03:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi,  I'm looking for Infomation on William Trotter.  Born about 1836, Ednam, Roxburghshire

I'm having trouble Confirming his birth and Marriage Information.

I have him on the 1861 Census living in Kelso with wife Margaret (M.S. Buchanan) and Son Thomas (brn 1858).  In 1871, he  is on the Census with wife Margaret and Children Thomas, William (brn 1866) and Mary (brn 1863)  Searching on Family Search also revealed another son James (brn 1869)

I have also located him on the 1881 census in Kelso and 1891 Census in Edinburgh.

In 1900 Margaret dies in Kelso and he dies in Kelso in 1910.

On his death Cert his parents are listed as James Trotter and mother just as m.s. Douglas.  Having searched on both Family Search and Scotlands people does not reveal any children named William to these parents or even a marriage for James Trotter & ? Douglas.  He dies in the poorhouse.

Searching for a William Trotter born about 1836 in Ednam  reveals a Christening record listing parents as Andrew Trotter and Jean Broomfield.  This appears to be the only William born in this area at that time.

I would really appreciate some help on this.

Thanks

I note on the 1841 census that there are 3 William's born about 1836.
1 parents Andrew & Jean as you mention in Kelso.
2 parents William & Alison at Smailholm.
3 - at Wood Market Kelso, Trotter's living with others but no apparent parents listed. Eldest, Douglas Trotter age 20 and 5 others all younger, William age 6 is the second youngest?

Maybe worth looking at this family?

Hi ,

William Trotter with Margaret Buchanan in 1861 is showing as born in Kelso -
http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/61transcript.aspx?houseid=79311096

William Trotter born Ednam , parents Andrew and Jane in 1861 -
http://www.maxwellancestry.com/census/61transcript.aspx?houseid=73203074

As Colin suggests the Wood Market Kelso family may be the one to look at.

(Although William is showing as not born in Roxburgh ?)

1851 Census transcrition above which would seem to match up with that 1841 Census
A link has been added to the 1861 Census but it is marked as "doubtful"  :-\

At least the William Trotter born to Andrew and Jean does not look like the one who married Margaret Buchanan.

Would the parents marriage not show on the birth certificates of later children ?

Quote
In birth certificates since 1861 however, the date and place of the parents' marriage was reinstated. Scotlandspeople(It was dropped after 1855)

Bingo  found the Marriage for William and Margaret on Son Williams Birth Certificate.  11 Nov 1857 at Coldstream.

Now to find the Marriage cert for William and Margaret,  which hopefully will list his parents.  (fingers crossed)

Thanks for all the help,  I was wondering about Andrew and Jean as parents,  (lead astray by an ancestry family tree in my early days)  The 1861 Census for Andrew and Jean have a son William living with them in Coldingham Berwickshire and my William is listed as living with Wife Margaret and eldest son Thomas  in Kelso on this Census. I think I will elimimate them as possible parents.

No it doesn't seem to match.

It lists William Trotter's age as 28 This makes him too old. (according to the census he was born anout 1836-1838.

Also Margaret is listed as a spinster,  it may of been a possibility if she was a widow,  second marriage and all that.

The certificate also says it was signed by him which sugggests he could write,  the B cert for son william just has a X which to me suggests he was illiterate.  Also Occupation is listed as Ploughman,  on the 1861 Census his occuparion is listed as a Labourer, later census's have him as a gardener and nursery Labourer.

So I don't think that is him,  thanks anyway.  Looks like Family search is online for me again, so I'll keep looking too.

Thanks
