« on: Wednesday 21 November 12 14:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have recently found death Cert of my Ancestor, and it states he died :

Sypilitic Ossium Necrosis Exhaustion ..

Now what is it please.. I thought Syphillis was a STD.. Or you were born with it, I have looked online and got myself so confused with where to look,

Many thanks

Syphilis was a horrendous disease and could be passed from mother to baby very easily usually affecting the eyes and leading to blindness.

Syhpilitic Necrosis of the bones is I think what is meant by the term on your relatives records, because the blood stream carries the disease to all of the body including the marrow of the bones.

This could also be caused I think by Tuberculosis, but I'm still looking through my 1800s medical dictionary!

Syphilis, interestingly enough is on the increase again. I only know this because I recently had a baby and the midwife was telling me that they test mothers for it! :o

I think i would agree.Necrosis is death of the tissue, ossium refers to bone and the other word being syphylis.

To have bones affected by syphilis he must have had it for at least 5 years according to the book I'm using.

Syphillis can be passed from mother to baby (i got offered the test when pregnant with all 3 babies) and as far as I am aware can lay dormant for a while, and can attack again at a later stage of life (this I am told was the problem in the 1800s/early 1900s until the right treatments were found) .

If your relative was in the Workhouse, it is possible they came in to contact with the disease in there, and what a breeding ground for illness  :(

I have googled the words you have left, and from piecing things together, it seems the poor soul died from fighting the infection.

If there is a private message facitily I will message you my findings.
