South & Wood families of Herefordshire
« on: Monday 26 November 12 04:25 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon,

I am trying to work past a blackstump with these two families.

Thomas Wood was a School teacher (son's marriage cert) who married Keziah South in 1799 at Moreton Jefferies HEF.

They had 9 chn in Moreton Jeffries & Stretton Grandison, but from the latter, the family disappears.  I only know of 3 out of the 9 chn - Joseph & his unmarried sisters, Elizabeth & Ann (together in 1851 Census). Joseph & family came to Australia soon after - nothing more on the sisters.

Keziah's possible parents are Richard & Susannah South.  There is a PCC will for this Richard South who dies in 1801 naming his chn . . . BUT neither he nor his wife are buried in Moreton Jeffries where he wrote the Will in 1792.

I have looked at the NBI, nothing found on either couple.

Any suggestions would gratefully received.

Regards . . . . BonnieB

the only Thomas and Keziah Wood baptisms of children I could find in Herefordshire are these

William Wood 1st april 1813 Stretton-Grandison ,Herefs
Richard Wood 24th sep 1809 S/Grandison
Jane Wood 2nd january 1803 S/Grandison
Joseph Wood 23rs sep 1804 S/Grandison
James Wood 6th dec 1807 S/Grandison
Susanna Wood 22nd sept 1811 S/Grandison
Elizabeth Wood 28th sep 1806 S/Grandison

that`s it --- only 7 .... can`t find any in Moreton Jeffries ...maybe their parish records aren`t transcribed yet ?
so we have to presume 1799-1802 there were 2 births in M/Jeffries ?

anyway...

Ha Ha ..I`ve just re-read our 2 posts and You have ANN WOOD apart from the 7 on record ...so that`s 8 ..was Ann born  Moreton Jeffries on the 1851 census ?
as Thomas was a schoolteacher - could he have moved temporarily ?
different county though

son of Thomas Wood and Kezia
Edward Wood -baptised 7th november 1819 in Fletching,Sussex ,England ....
could this be number 9 ?
maybe he moved for a higher teaching post ?....seems a long way to move with 8 kids in tow ...I would make a note of Edward Wood for future reference....at least you have 8 out of the 9
hope this all helps
allan ;)

Thanx muchly Allan for your interest & assistance.

I have 9 chn in my records now - Ann was baptised at Moreton Jeffries (8 Sep 1799) but her parents were given as "James" & Kezia thought possible mistake by sexton in records as she, Ann, appears as 'sister' in 1851 Census. You also missed 'Thomas' as he was 1st cab off the rank at Stretton G. in 15 Nov 1801.

I've been using FamilySearch for many years - usually the 1st place I look.   :)

Joseph (1804) is our rele, found him in Worcester as a Baker in 1841, then in Birmingham 1851, before immigrating to Australia in 1858.  As far as I can find, no others besides his wife & chn came with him.

Having problems with his wife also, but that is in another place & county.  :(

Cheers . . . . . BonnieB
