Looking for Leonard Moreton
« on: Monday 26 November 12 11:37 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out more about my 2x great grandfather Leonard Moreton.

He was born on 30 March 1872 at 18 Sycamore Street, Manchester, Lancashire and was the youngest child of Isaac and Mary Moreton who came from Derbyshire.

I have him on his daughter Ada May's marriage certificate from 24 July 1920 where it states that he is a bricklayer.  Ada May married at St Anne's Church, Keighley, West Yorkshire and I assume she was living with her father at the time of the marriage.

It wasn't until yesterday when I couldn't find him on the 1911 census that I realised that he may have died before 1920 and for some reason he wasn't recorded as deceased.  I wrongly assumed that he may have been still living at this time.

I can't find at all on the probate calendar either ???.

Any help in finding Leonard is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I note as dave has found on the 1901 his wife was born in America so maybe emigrated?

In 1881 he is with parents and 6 older siblings.

I should have said I have him on the census from 1881 to 1901.

I can't see him in 1911.

I'm sorry if you have wasted your time finding the info :-[

I didn't want to bombard you with too much information :o

I noticed the mispelling too and also that Leonard's birthplace had changed between census'.

His father Isaac must have moved around a lot because of his work.

I can't see anyone in 1911 - him, wife or children.  Nor could I find his marriage to Ada *

I've had that on marriage certificates where the father isn't noted as deceased but is long gone so never assume the person is still alive even if it looks that way.

Have you found a death for his wife?  He could have remarried.  Seems a fairly unusual name to locate and there is a Leonard Moreton marriage in 1920 Nuneaton to Ellen Jarvis.

I can't see a death that fits your Leonard.

* this might be it. Leornard Morton Ada May Wilkinson Jun 1894 Sheffield.

Leonard's wife Ada May died in 1907.  I have her death certificate.

After her mother's death Ada May (my great grandmother) was looked after by an auntie called Elizabeth Cooper.

I assumed this happened so Leonard was free to go to work and provide for his family.

Now I can't see him after 1901 I wonder if he died too?

Leonard married Ada May Wilkinson on 15 May 1894 at St Jude's Church, Moorfield, Sheffield, South Yorkshire.  She was the one who died in 1907.

I had a look whilst at the library and found a Leonard Moreton on a passenger list from Liverpool to Halifax Canada.  This was in 1910.  He was marked as single and a labourer.  If it was him it would explain why we can't find him in 1911 *

Do you know what happened to the other daughter Beatrice?

* nope scrap that.  Leonard Moreton who emigrated 1910 was born 1884 married to Mary Jane father of Lilian per the 1916 Canada census.  Rats.
