Bridget and Thomas Levy/Lever
« on: Tuesday 04 December 12 20:39 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I`m new to this site, so am not sure about how to do things.....can anyone explain how to trace convicts in early Australia? I know the above couple had a daughter, Ann and Bridget was tried for murdering a woman at the Rocks in 1823, but acquitted....how do you go past that and find out about Thomas and Bridget`s history-where they were born, were they convicts etc

Hi and welcome to Rootschat Gail55 ;D

I assume this is your little family
V18205046 1B/1820 ANN LEVER,  FATHER THOMAS, MOTHER BRIDGET.

So Ann was born 1820. Now to dig up the history from that, where did you get the name LEVY or is that their original name? I cannot see a marriage, did they marry prior to coming to Australia?

Hi,
This would appear to be the murder  case to which Gail55 is referring:

Mary REDMAN or REDMOND, Bridget LEVER, Thomas FRANCIS and William FENNING
Murder of Happy Filler at The Rocks
1823
Reel 1979
2703 [SZ801] 1

Wow....you guys are good!!! Yes, that is the family-after Bridget died, Ann was sent to the orphnage in Parramatta.......I can then follow her to her 3 marriages, dalliances with bushrangers- she was the mother of one....Johnny the_______ I think it is Johnny the Tailor but am not sure-apparently she lived with Jacky Jacky aka Jingera Jack -her daughters were with the Clark Bothers(bushrangers) Ann`s daughter Matilda Kelly (to Thomas Kelly) is our relative.............So, I want to find out about Bridget and Ann`s father Thomas Levy-also spelt a few different ways........thanks for the support! gail55

Hi Gail55, any chance of answering some of my earlier questions?

About their marriage, you seem to have some research done already, how far have you got with it? I cannot find a marriage in NSW, so dont know bridgets last name, I cannot see any referance to thomas except the birth of Ann, also I had a look at the orphan schools and she doesn't appear in them?

We may be able to go on if you can dot a few eyes.

Hello Neil -
sorry , your email was lost among some others and I have just seen it. The info I have so far is that maybe Thomas Levy/Leaver etc was in the 48th  Regiment? I think he may have come to Australia on the "Matilda" in 1817(Third Fleet). On the Convict Muster 1806-1849, I found a Bridget Leaves also on the Matilda and it said she was married to someone in the 48th Regiment, but I can`t decipher the name -  I hope I am not going off on a tangent and these aren`t they people I am looking for?

Bridget was tried but acquitted for the murder of the prostitute Happy Filler in 1822/23 and I think Bridget was a prostitute, too.

Ann , the daughter was admitted to the Parramatta Orphange in 1826 when her mother died-so I don`t know where the father, Thomas, was.. Ann married John Hurley in 1835 aged 15 and I can follow her from there.

Maybe I have all the information that I can get- short of doing research in UK-
  thanks-Gail55
