Hi Lir,
I'm Sarah Walker, my grandfather was Walter Cole. I understand that Chris and her sister Bridie went to live in Walter's house , 3 Mountjoy Square, after Sean her husband died. My grandmother, Moira nee Redden married Walter in 1927,(that year I think), she was his second wife, 40 years younger than him! I'm interested to know more about your grandmother and their family. My mother Dorothy( deceased) used to mention that she vaguely knew about them but not much. She and her sister Pauline grew up in the house in Mountjoy Square.
Best,
Sarah

Hi H.C.,

Mary Christine 'Chris' Swanzy was born on 7 December 1893 to William Swanzy and Mary Stephens (or possibly Stephenson). She had five siblings who survived to adulthood: Bridie, Pat, Denis, Peg and Billy. Chris was married to Sean Connolly in 1910, as you know, and had three children: Kevin, Aiden (note spelling) and Madge. Chris was widowed in 1916 and married Thomas Joseph 'Joe' McCarthy sometime around 1924. Chris and Joe had two children, Iain and Patricia (who died in infancy). I'm Chris's grandson; if you want any further information (or have any to give me!) just let me know.

Best,
Lir

Chris's sister was called Bríd and she married Tom Casserly a former intelligence officer with the Old IRA and subsequent Chief Superintendent in the Gardai. She lived with him at 3 Mountjoy Square briefly when they had the first two of her five children. The first Margaret (Peggy) Casserly was born there in 1924 and the second Arthur Griffith Casserly was also born in No. 3 the following year. Griffith was killed when he crashed his Irish Air Corps aircraft in 1944. Peggy is still alive and happens to be my mother. Incidentally, it appears that your grandfather Walter was somewhat smitten by the widowed Chris, and proposed marriage on a number of occasions.
