Frederick GALLMAN
« on: Friday 14 December 12 06:27 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information about my grandpas dad. My grandpa's name was Frederick Lewis Gallman from Adelaide. His father was named Frederick Gallman too. He was born about 1878 and died on the 21st Jan 1924. His wife was Edith Rebecca Gray born 4 Nov 1884 in Magill, SA.

I know Frederick Gallman was raised by a different family, however he did not take their name and kept Gallman. I have no idea where he was born, how his family arrived in South Australia.

Any help please.

Thanks for searching for me.
This is the one part of our family tree that is a mystery. We have no idea who his parents were, or even if Gallman was his birth name. My mother is a Gallman and they can only record the family back as far as Edith and Frederick.

I think we have lost the information over time with the passing of our ancestors that might have know the information.

Thanks again

Hello  :)

A Fridel Gallman (German for Frederick) arrived via Potosi May 1881 .
PROV does not list which port he disembarked.  the steamer was ex London to Adelaide, Melbourne 11 May 1881 and NSW.
He was aged 37, travelling alone. 3rd class passenger

PROV passenger list B390 p007 (Foreign) may have further details re occupation and place of birth.

I would search for a subsequent marriage and births in NSW and Victoria of this Fridel or Friedel Gallman.

Good Luck  :)

Could be nothing but wonder if this is worthy of investigation ...

The South Australian Advertiser, Saturday 7 July 1883
POLICE COURT-ADELAIDE
Fritz Gallman, charged with being a neglected child, was sent to the Industrial School until sixteen years of age

'Fritz' can be a nickname for 'Frederick'? looks as if an Industrial School (not sure if the industrial school) was in Magill (same suburb where his eventual wife lived?)

Thanks for finding this information. I think this Fridel Gallman would be to old to be the Frederick Gallman I am looking for. From the headstone at Magill, Frederick was 46 years old when he passed which means he was born abt 1878.

Thanks heaps. I'll keep this information just incase it fits into my family history elsewhere.

Thanks so much. This could be the person I am looking for. My mother has told me that Frederick lived with another family (which would suggest he was from an orphanage or something). This information would have made him 5 years old when charged with neglect.
I'll discuss this with my mum and see if it brings back any memories that she has of this maybe happening.

Thanks again.
