A RootsChat database for Travelling People
« on: Friday 14 December 12 13:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I have recently implemented a database for Special Interest Groups (DBSIG).
The "first customers" are the German Pork Butchers, i.e those germans who emigrated to Britain and continued their trade as pork butchers there.

My question to you all, is:
would it be useful to have a similar database on RootsChat for Travellers,
or are there already enough other web-sites available with such databases ?

You can see more about the database here:
Topic: DBSIG: Database for Special Interest Groups
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,625141.0.html

In particular, read the DBSIG Help-Page to get some ideas of what the database (could) contains.
http://surname.rootschat.com/lexicon/dbsig/gpb-help.php?show=gi#gi

If there is enough interest, we can then discuss what information would be needed for a traveller's database, and how the table views and page views could look.

regards,
Bob

Having looked at your links to your database, it looks a very good idea. There is not, as far as I know,  a database online for ancestry of Travelling peoples. I for one would say yes.

Yes please Bob, so long as the definition of travellers is basically left to the users of the thread.

Not a lot of feedback on this - I don't know what would be needed, or how it should be presented.

I'll leave the "offer" here for a while longer.

Hi Bob

I hope it's not too late to put my oar in - I'd certainly welcome a traveller data base.  I reckon the traffic that the Hedges brothers generated shows that traveller/Gypsy famiies would welcome easily accessible information.

Apart from the usual BMD data (names, dates, locations), what other data would be useful in such a database - i.e. to help sorting and searching.

e.g.
- types of "Travelling People" (Romanies, Gypsies, Tinkers, Travellers, circus, theatre, musician, ... ) ?
- major occupations or working ares ?

Please give me your feedback on this, as it would be good to have more than just a list of names and dates.
