The Cart and Horses, Sutton in Ashfield.
« on: Saturday 15 December 12 21:56 GMT (UK) »
Would like to find any information about the address or history of 'The Cart and Horses' Public House.
I know it existed 1823 to 1826 as a George Penistant was landlord there.

Thanks
John

The Post Office Directory for Nottinghamshire in 1855 shows the pub being owned/run by a T J Penistant - one of George's family, I presume.

http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=ctRAAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA190&dq=the+cart+and+horses+sutton+in+ashfield&hl=en&sa=X&ei=Rd3NUJTELceo0QWAzYCABQ&ved=0CDsQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=the%20cart%20and%20horses%20sutton%20in%20ashfield&f=false

The pub now appears to be owned by Marston's so it might be worth sending them an email, as I reckon they may still have some of the documents from around that time.

Also just found this on the Nottinghamshire Archives online catalogue. They might be worth approaching to see if the document has any further information

"Alehouse keeper's recognizance (bond) for George Penistant of The Cart and Horse in Sutton in Ashfield" - 1825 & 1826.

It also looks as if they hold a copy of his will.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the information, all very interesting

Thomas Johnson Penistant was George's son, looks like he took over, he is listed as being Innkeeper 1851, 1861 census.

The Cart & Horses, 1007, Forest Lane, Sutton in Ashfield  next to the Railway Station in 1861 census

Anyone know of a street map of the area around mid to late 1800's  ?

Hello.... :)

Try this site.....  http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html -  type in this postcode in the search box = NG17 5HF and to the right hand side are the historical maps which show the Cart & Horse.

I was very interested to find these posts.  My ancestor Joseph Johnson died in 1813 at Grindley Staffordshire and in his Will named his Executor as 'My Friend George Penistant of Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire'.  I found this surprising because there is a distance of around 40 miles between them.  Has anyone found a link with George Penistant and Staffordshire?  Joseph was originally from Shardlow Derbyshire, baptised in 1733.

An Ann Penistant died at the Cart and Horses, 25 November 1844, age 71

Thank you.  I did wonder about Ann Johnson but when they married she states she was from Bilsthorpe.  Her age on the 1841 census provides a birth year of 1766 and I felt she was probably baptised in 1763 at Eakring, a village next to Bilsthorpe.
